BAT Construction Ltd. is a Canadian leader in Slope Stabilization and Geotechnical Construction, and we are expanding to meet the growing demand for our expert services. As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and productive work environment, we are looking to hire an experienced Safety Coordinator to join our team for a major field-based project in the Alberta Oil Sands. This position will be essential in supporting our operations and ensuring that construction and logistical standards are consistently upheld across all aspects of the project. The Safety Coordinator will work closely with BAT's leadership team, clients, contractors, and internal staff to continuously uphold the safety standards within our operations. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to anticipate and mitigate risks. The ideal candidate will bring a wealth of experience in Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance within construction or industrial settings. Those with a solid background in Geotechnical hazard mitigation, slope stabilization, and safety management will be given preference.

As part of a growing, dynamic company, you will play a vital role in the execution and continuous improvement of BAT Construction’s project delivery standards — helping to ensure that we adhere to safety, regulatory, and performance benchmarks while continuing to lead the industry in construction excellence.
The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time in the field supporting crews, verifying critical controls, coaching supervisors, and engaging workers at the work face to ensure safe work practices are effectively implemented.
Responsabilites:
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of company HSE policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Support the head office HSE Manager in conducting job hazard analysis (JHA) and risk assessments for ongoing projects.
- Assist in training and orienting new employees on safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct daily field verification activities to confirm critical controls are effectively implemented and maintained.
- Review and verify Daily Critical Control Verifications (DCCVs), Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs), and other frontline risk management tools.
- Coach supervisors and workers on hazard identification, risk assessment, critical control verification, and stop-work expectations.
- Build positive working relationships with frontline personnel through frequent field engagement and visible leadership.
- Participate in leadership field engagements and support implementation of BAT's Safety Improvement and Verification Programs.
- Track, document, and follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely closure and verification of effectiveness.
- Identify emerging trends, recurring deficiencies, and opportunities for continuous improvement and communicate findings to project leadership.
- Support implementation of BAT's Critical Control Verification (CCV) Program and Supervisor Field Verification Program.
- Wear a respirator when and where required by safety protocols and job demands, ensuring a proper seal and fit at all times.
- Participate in accident/incident investigations, gather data, and contribute to corrective actions.
- Ensure proper usage and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) across worksites.
- Support the promotion of a positive safety culture and encourage employee participation in safety initiatives.
- Prepare and maintain safety-related documentation including reports, audits, and training records.
- Liaise with clients and subcontractors to ensure adherence to safety standards.
- Assist in maintaining safety-related subscriptions and certifications.
- Provide support for emergency response planning and safety drills.
- Possess strong leadership skills and attention to detail and judgment as well as an exceptional ability to organize, plan, and anticipate adversity.

- BAT Construction has multiple project sites across Canada that operate at any given time (day or night) thus flexibility is required regarding work schedules, hours, rotations, shifts, and locations. Employees are expected to adapt to these changes as required by the company.
Authorizations:
· Authorized to perform safety inspections and audits.
· Authorized to initiate safety stand-downs when immediate corrective actions are required.
Qualifications:
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer), CSO (Construction Safety Officer), or similar safety certification.
- Strong understanding of OHS legislation and safety standards.
- Familiarity with PPE maintenance and safety equipment use.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in safety management software and general computer applications.
- Minimum 5 years of field-based construction, industrial, mining, oil and gas, or heavy civil HSE experience.
- Demonstrated experience coaching workers and supervisors and influencing safe work practices in the field.
- Strong understanding of Critical Risk Management, Critical Controls, Field Level Risk Assessments, and Incident Prevention principles.
- Experience supporting high-risk activities such as working at heights, mobile equipment operations, energy isolation/LOTO, lifting and rigging, conventional and geotechnical drilling operations, rock scaling, shotcrete application, anchoring systems, and slope stabilization construction activities.
- Ability to work independently in remote industrial environments while maintaining strong communication with project leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in mining, oil sands, geotechnical construction, heavy civil construction, slope stabilization, drilling, anchoring, shotcrete operations, and experience with incident investigation methodologies such as ICAM or TapRoot.
Location: Camp job - In person – Fort McMurray, AB
Rotation: two weeks on, two weeks off - Full-time, Seasonal
Pay: $40.00-$52.65 per hour
