The Medical Laboratory Technologist I assists with the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing a variety of standard examinations and procedures in chemistry; responsible for organizing time and resources for the effective conduct of laboratory examinations and procedures; participates in the Department's rotation of duties including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holiday schedules, and performs other related and allied duties.
Duties will include:
- Determining required procedure by reading requisitions and seeking clarification if necessary from physicians and paramedical staff;
- Providing information to patients, physicians and paramedical staff regarding the regimes associated with various tests and specimen collections;
- Obtaining venous and capillary blood samples required for blood tests and analyses using prescribed aseptic and veni-puncture techniques;
- Performing diagnostic tests directly on patients as required;
- Preparing specimens for test procedures by centrifuging, separating, measuring and pipetting precise quantities required for analytical procedures;
- Analyzing specimens to determine the existence and/or proportion of constituent biological/chemical components and other specimen characteristics according to standard manual and automated procedures;
- Preparing and using standard and control solutions to calibrate equipment and ensuring proper operation in accordance with test and quality control procedures;
- Using computerized data management and reporting systems in an efficient and effective manner;
- Forwarding test and analysis results to the requesting physician or to the patient's location
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Technology Program from an accredited institution;
- Licensed or eligible for licensing with the PEI College of Allied Health Professionals;
- Current registration with the C.S.M.L.S. at the Registered Technologist level;
- Tthe ability to work independently and with others is essential;
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential;
- A good previous work and attendance record.
Other Qualifications:
- Recent training and/or experience in Chemistry is an asset;
- Recent training and/or experience in Hematology is an asset;
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
