COINAtlantic is currently seeking a detail-oriented Finance Officer to support its financial operations. This part-time position averages approximately 5 hours per week and offers the potential for an additional Finance Officer opportunity with the International Ocean Institute – Canada (IOI-Canada), averaging approximately 10 hours per week.
The Coastal & Ocean Information Network Atlantic (COINAtlantic) is a non-governmental organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For more than 30 years COINAtlantic has supported the integrated management of coastal and ocean resources in Atlantic Canada through open data management and information sharing.
The International Ocean Institute - Canada (IOI-Canada) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, hosted by Dalhousie University, with more than 45 years of experience working in Canada and internationally. IOI-Canada's mission is to promote responsible ocean governance and the stewardship and sustainable use of coastal and ocean resources in Canada and around the world.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director of COINAtlantic, the Finance Officer will be responsible for managing day-to-day financial operations, maintaining accurate financial records, and supporting budgeting, reporting, and financial administration. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the organization's financial processes are efficient, accurate, and compliant with applicable policies and requirements.
This position is ideal for a highly organized professional with strong attention to detail. Experience in financial administration within the non-profit, or academic sectors is considered an asset.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions, bill payments, invoicing, payroll, etc.
- Maintain and reconcile financial records using accounting spreadsheets, ensuring accuracy, security, and confidentiality
- Complete account reconciliations
- Prepare and submit HST and tax returns
- Coordinate and support annual audits
- Prepare financial statements and assist with funding proposals and reporting including annual organization and project budgets
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, policies related to financial procedures
- Provide administrative support and assist in course and event planning and coordination, as required
Experience and Skills:
- Knowledge of payroll and bookkeeping, gained through education and/or equivalent experience
- Proficiency in spreadsheet software and online financial systems
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, external partners, and the public
- Experience preparing budgets and financial reports.
- Experience with Accounting Software is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a similar role within a non-profit organization or at Dalhousie University is considered an asset
Conditions of Work:
- Salary: $21-30 per hour (based on experience)
- Start date: as soon as possible.
- Hours: approximately 5 hours per week with a potential for an additional 10 hours per week (flexible schedule)
- Work must be performed between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Atlantic Time to support collaboration with staff
- Work Environment: Hybrid (some on-site work required; preference for candidates able to work on-site at Dalhousie University)
