Empire Life is looking to hire an Investment Analyst to join our Fixed Income team!
The Investment Analyst, Fixed Income provides assistance to the Fixed Income Team in the active management of fixed income portfolios across various institutional and retail mandates.
This role will be focused primarily on Canadian investment grade, government credit, and interest rates.
The Fixed Income Team invests in a variety of asset classes including public bonds, private debt placements, commercial mortgages, preferred shares, money market instruments and external alternative funds. The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives and works under the supervision of a senior fixed income team member.

What you’ll be working on
Collect and analyze industry, company and economic information from a variety of sources including websites, institutional research, corporate reports, investor presentations, industry publications, and credit agency publications
Analyze financial information relating to companies via annual reports, quarterly reports and investor presentations
Assist in the asset selection process through analysis of individual investment opportunities and how they will contribute to the overall portfolio performance
Assist in the preparation of investment recommendations and memos to be distributed internally
Coordinate financial settlements with the Investment Administration team
Assist in the management of fixed income assets including public bonds, preferred shares and money market instruments
Monitor individual holdings’ compliance with loan covenants as well as their internal credit ratings through periodic reviews of Issuer financial performance and covenant compliance
Assist in the construction and maintenance of screens using software such as Bloomberg to filter database of companies to identify potential investment ideas
Organize all available information and data effectively in order to build and maintain spreadsheet models for both valuation and monitoring purposes
Maintain statistics on the portfolio regarding exposures, company information and valuation parameters
Assist in the preparation of reports on portfolio investment performance
Actively participate in and contribute to Investment team strategic meetings.
Other ad hoc duties as may arise
1-3 years of investment research experience, particularly in the analysis of fixed income instruments such as public bonds gained in commercial, corporate, or investment banking, a life insurance company, debt capital markets dealers, or an investment manager.
Strong knowledge of credit principles and capital markets coupled with strong intellectual curiosity
Ability to present complex concepts in a clear and precise manner
Completion of a university degree with courses in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, quantitative methods
CFA or working toward designation
Well-developed mathematical skills
High proficiency in Excel including VBA, Word and PowerPoint, programming experience in Python is desirable
Experience with Bloomberg is desirable
Strong research and financial modelling skills
Clear written and verbal communication skills
Attention to detail/accuracy
Ability to operate effectively under sometimes tight timelines and competing priorities
