Shipper/ Receiver (Lead Hand)
Prairie West Ice Cream is a Manitoba family-owned and operated business dedicated to producing high-quality ice cream products. Our plant is currently CFIA, BRC, and Peanut-free certified. Our plant produces several brands of ice cream in a variety of container sizes and is increasing our portfolio each year with new products and clients. Committed to excellence, we take pride in our premium products and are looking for dedicated, reliable, and detail-oriented individuals with warehouse management experience and leadership skills to join our team. This role is ideal for an experienced shipper/receiver who can take ownership of warehouse operations and provide day-to-day leadership to the team.
The ideal candidate will be responsible not only for shipment handling and inventory control, but also for coordinating workflow, supporting team members, and ensuring operational efficiency in the warehouse, cooler, and freezer areas.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead daily shipping and receiving operations, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness.
- Coordinate and prioritize tasks for warehouse staff and provide hands-on support as needed.
- Load and unload shipments from trucks using forklifts, pallet jacks, and safe lifting techniques.
- Responsible for inventory management and product movement.
- Ensure storage of ingredients at food-safe temperatures and adhering to allergen controls.
- Package, label, and prepare necessary documents for shipments.
- Check inbound shipments against packing slips and enter data into database, reporting any discrepancies.
- Manage inventory in/ out of freezer and assisting in daily, weekly, and monthly inventory counts.
- Input data into the tracking and on monthly inventory sheet.
- Ensure frozen inventory is stored and shipped on a first-in, first-out (FIFO) basis.
- Select lot # and starts filling out next day’s production of pails, lids and cartons by selecting them from inventory according to FIFO.
- Work safely in freezer conditions (-25°C) for extended periods.
- Perform general warehouse duties and maintain cleanliness in warehouse, cooler, and freezer.
- Assist other departments with ingredient and packaging supply for scheduled production.
- Provide break relief by assisting with palletizing during the day.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a shipping/ receiving role within an industrial environment
- Experience in food industry with knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), traceability/ recall, and FIFO.
- Forklift and pallet jack experience are required.
- Mechanical aptitude, with the ability to operate tools and equipment required for shipping/ receiving duties.
- Proficient in Excel, along with other computer skills, (emails, MS Word).
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrates a high level of accuracy in operational tasks and documentation.
- Accountable and committed to following rules, regulations, and company procedures.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Reliable, dependable, accountable, and flexible.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, Class 3 with air preferred.
- Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- Proficient in English language (verbal, reading, and written).
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 – 70 lbs.
- Ability to work on feet for long periods.
- Strong teamwork skills with effective communication abilities.
