About Us: Freeman & Lourenco LLP is a well-established accounting firm based in Oshawa, ON, with over 45 years of experience. We specialize in providing tax, accounting, assurance, and consulting services to small and medium-sized businesses, individuals, and not-for-profit enterprises in the Durham region and across Ontario. As our firm continues to expand, we are seeking an experienced Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will play a key role in managing client relationships, reviewing tax and assurance work, supervising staff, and supporting the delivery of high-quality tax, accounting, assurance, and advisory services.
Job Requirements and Skills:
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required, or near completion with significant public practice experience.
- 5+ years of experience in public practice, including supervisory, review, and client management experience.
- Very strong experience preparing and reviewing Personal Tax (T1) returns across a wide range of profiles, including employment and self-employment income, rental properties, investments, capital gains, owner-managers, deceased or terminal returns, and other complex personal tax situations.
- Strong working knowledge of Corporate Tax (T2), Trust Tax (T3), and related tax and regulatory filings, including T4, T5, T5018, HST, EHT, WSIB, and similar forms.
- Experience managing audit and review engagements from planning through completion, including file documentation, staff supervision, financial statement review, and partner wrap-up.
- Strong knowledge of CSRS 4200 compilation engagements, CSRE 2400 review engagements, Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS), Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), and accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO), as applicable.
- Proficiency with accounting, tax, and assurance software such as Caseware, Cantax, QuickBooks, and Sage 50 (Simply Accounting). Experience with other accounting and tax software is also considered an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical research, and professional judgment skills.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain tax and accounting matters clearly to clients and staff.
- Proven leadership abilities, including the ability to coach, train, and review the work of junior and senior staff.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, attention to detail, and organizational ability.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines, budgets, and priorities, particularly during tax season and engagement deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively with partners and team members.
- Ability to work from the Oshawa office and attend client sites as required.
Responsibilities:
- Manage personal tax season workflow, including preparation, detailed review, and quality control of T1 returns.
- Review and, where required, prepare T2, T3, T4, T5, T5018, HST, EHT, WSIB, and other tax or regulatory filings.
- Manage audit and review engagements for private enterprises and not-for-profit clients, including planning, fieldwork supervision, issue resolution, file review, financial statement review, and completion of engagement documentation.
- Lead and review CSRS 4200 compilation engagements (Notice to Reader) for small to large private entities.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve accounting, assurance, and tax issues, and raise significant technical matters with partners on a timely basis.
- Apply working knowledge of ASPE, ASNPO, CAS, CSRE 2400, CSRS 4200, and applicable tax legislation.
- Act as a primary point of contact for assigned clients, respond to client questions in a timely and professional manner, and develop strong relationships with client management.
- Supervise, train, and mentor staff and senior accountants; review work, provide feedback, and support team development.
- Manage engagement budgets, deadlines, scheduling, and workflow to ensure high-quality work is delivered on time.
- Set up files for new clients, assist newly incorporated businesses, and provide accounting software support to clients where required.
- Identify opportunities for tax planning, advisory services, and process improvements for both clients and the firm.
- Contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches to improve firm processes, quality control, and client service.
- Perform ad hoc tasks and support partners with practice management matters as assigned.
