ApprenticeHeavy Equipment Technician – St. John’s
We are seeking an Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician to join our team at our new facility at 242 Danny Drive in St. John’s. An Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician assists journeyperson technicians in repairing and maintaining machinery such as excavators, tractors, wheel loaders, telehandlers and skid steers. They combine hands-on mechanical work with formal technical training to eventually earn their own journeyperson certification.
Core Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Inspection: Conducting routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, lubrication) and inspecting machines to detect potential faults or malfunctions.
- Diagnostic Assistance: Helping diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical failures using computerized testing equipment and technical manuals.
- Repair & Overhaul: Adjusting, repairing, or replacing worn components like engines, transmissions, and brake systems under supervision.
- Testing: Verifying that repaired equipment meets original manufacturer specifications through performance testing.
- Shop Support: Maintaining a clean, safe workspace, organizing inventory, and completing service records or work orders.
Key Skills & Physical Demands
- Technical Knowledge: A foundational understanding of machines, hand tools, and power tools is essential.
- Problem Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills to identify the cause of complex equipment failures.
- Physical Strength: The role involves heavy lifting (up to 23 kg/50 lbs), bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces or varied weather conditions.
- Safety Conscious: Must strictly follow safety procedures to handle hazardous industrial equipment safely.
Requirements & Compensation
- Education: Requires a high school diploma and enrollment in a recognized apprenticeship program.
- Tools: Apprentices are expected to provide their own basic toolset and toolbox.
- Licensing: A valid driver’s license is mandatory with a clean drivers abstract.
- Pay Structure: Compensation is a percentage of a journeyperson's rate, increasing as the apprentice progresses through their levels
