Job Summary
The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the effective management of all engineering and maintenance operations within the hotel. They must strive towards the improvement of guest satisfaction and associate engagement with a “hands on” approach to guest service and team support in daily assignments. They must also ensure that the hotel remains in excellent aesthetic condition while minimizing operating and capital expenditures.
Key Responsibilities: (Include but not limited to)
- Dispatches, assigns and directs Engineering associates engaged in building operations, inspections, routine and non- routine repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, life safety, electrical and mechanical distribution systems to ensure guest satisfaction to client service requests.
- Ensuring engineering team responds to the needs of hotel guests as dispatched, including performing preventive maintenance or repair requests on all in-house systems and equipment such as: telephones, TV’s, locks, plumbing, HVAC and electrical equipment to ensure their effective operation.
- Communicate effectively to all Engineering associates using tools such as development reviews, training, developmental orientation, pre-shift meetings and monthly departmental meetings.
- Responsible for the selection, training and development of engineering team.
- Select, supervises and liaises with contractors and staff repairing and upgrading elevators, kitchen systems and the central plant and all auxiliary equipment
- Monitors, directs and reviews associates and contractors scope on projects and that they are completed on time and within acceptable standards to ensure compliance with health, safety and fire regulations, building and municipal codes and Hotel policies and procedures.
- Create and implement the fire and emergency procedures and roll out to all associates.
- Prepare, recommend and implement an annual departmental operating budget and the Hotel capital budget, monitoring progress throughout the year.
- Confirm that all equipment is functioning properly and that preventative maintenance measures are performed to preserve the Hotel and keep product quality to Sheraton standard.
- Ensures departmental productivity, training, associates issues and communications are implemented properly and to expected standards, organizational policy and applicable bylaws. This includes the engineering teams operating records and logbooks are up to date.
- Coordinates, distributes and reviews daily service and weekly preventive maintenance work orders and maintenance record logs, time sheets, labor and material charges
- Researches service and material suppliers and recommends through comparison analysis and efficiencies on new and or existing vendor / suppliers to provide and maintain material, parts inventories and services for the engineering department
- Performs and maintains the issuing of purchase orders, placing orders, receiving deliverables, including maintenance and reconciliation of the accounts, reports, files and records. Maintain inventories or repair parts and supplies to support building and preventative maintenance initiatives.
- Maintains department organization through efficient maintenance and scheduling and ensuring up to date records by timely adjustment, submission and forwarding of payroll, benefits, attendance, approved vacation requests, and maintenance of engineering team records
- Enters and maintains various data on the facility, including equipment records and utility consumption, while providing various statistical and efficiency reports and presentations on the departments purchasing, inventory stock and labor by entering and modifying records.
- Handles guest concerns, compliments and suggestions in a professional manner, using LEARN processes and principles
- Follows all company and job-specific safety policies, and reports any accident and/or hazard immediately
- Actively participates as a member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee
- Undertakes special projects and other duties as assigned by senior management
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in a management or chief engineer role in a facility of comparable size and operation preference
- Building Environmental Systems Class I&II, Systems Maintenance Technician or equivalent certification preference
- Six years building maintenance experience required, hotel environment preferred
- Minimum five (5) years combined mechanical, electrical, life safety experience
- Minimum three (3) years combined supervisory and purchasing experience
- Experience in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pneumatics, mechanics, and controls preferred
- Minimum five (5) years’ experience using computerized word processors, spreadsheets and databases
- Must have a high degree of organization and the ability to multi-task
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours which may include weekends, holidays and late nights.
- Effective and professional verbal and written communication skills in working with associates, guests, vendors, and contractors required (but not limited to)
- Ability to read blueprints and technical data
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act; Joint Health & Safety Committee Certification preferred
