Field Assistant (Construction Coordinator) – Civil / Heavy Civil / Marine Construction

Position Summary
The Field Assistant will support field supervisors, project managers, engineers, and construction crews in the execution of civil, heavy civil, and marine construction works. The role includes assisting with daily site coordination, documentation, quantity tracking, safety compliance, quality control support, and communication between field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, and office staff.
The position is suitable for a candidate with 2 to 3 years of field experience in civil construction, heavy civil infrastructure, or marine-related works, with a strong willingness to learn and grow within the construction industry.

- Breakwaters and shoreline protection
- Bridges and bridge rehabilitation
- Marine structures and marina works
- Maintenance shops
- Office buildings
- Industrial and commercial civil works
- Excavation, grading, backfill, utilities, concrete, asphalt, drainage, and roadworks
Duties and ResponsibilitiesField Coordination
- Assist the site supervisor, superintendent, and project team with daily field coordination.
- Coordinate with field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, operators, and inspectors as required.
- Support the planning and organization of daily work activities.
- Monitor site access, material delivery, equipment movement, and work sequencing.
- Assist in coordinating civil, structural, utility, grading, concrete, and heavy equipment activities.
- Help ensure work is completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
Site Documentation and Reporting
- Prepare and maintain daily field reports, work records, progress updates, and site notes.
- Record manpower, equipment, weather conditions, material deliveries, and completed work quantities.
- Take site photographs and organize them for project records.
- Assist with time sheets, delivery tickets, inspection forms, and field logs.
- Support preparation of quantity take-offs and progress measurement.
- Track materials, tools, equipment, and subcontractor activities on site.
Quality Control Support
- Assist with field inspections and quality control documentation.
- Verify that construction activities follow approved drawings, specifications, and standards.
- Support concrete testing, compaction testing, asphalt testing, material sampling, and inspection coordination as required.
- Report any deficiencies, non-conformances, or field issues to the supervisor or project manager.
- Assist in maintaining inspection checklists, test reports, and quality records.
Health, Safety and Environmental Support
- Support site safety requirements and promote safe work practices.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, safety orientations, and daily hazard assessments.
- Assist with maintaining safe access, housekeeping, signage, barricades, and traffic control coordination.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and environmental concerns to the supervisor.
- Support environmental protection measures, especially for marine, shoreline, bridge, and water-adjacent works.
Civil and Heavy Civil Work Support
- Assist with layout coordination, excavation, grading, backfill, compaction, drainage, underground utilities, concrete works, asphalt works, and roadworks.
- Support coordination of heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, cranes, rollers, dump trucks, barges, and marine equipment.
- Monitor work progress and help identify delays, constraints, or resource requirements.
- Assist in confirming material quantities and field measurements.
- Support field crews with drawings, sketches, specifications, and work instructions.
Marine and Bridge Work Support
- Assist with coordination of marine works including breakwater construction, shoreline protection, rock placement, pile works, marina structures, and related civil works.
- Support bridge construction or rehabilitation activities including access works, concrete repairs, formwork, rebar, deck works, drainage, and approach works.
- Assist with coordination of tides, weather impacts, access constraints, marine equipment, and environmental protection measures where applicable.
- Help maintain communication between field crews, supervisors, engineers, and inspectors.
Office and Administrative Support
- Use Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, for documentation and communication.
- Assist in preparing simple reports, spreadsheets, material logs, and progress summaries. (Bluebeam & HCSS experience considered an asset).
- Maintain organized project records and support document control.
- Communicate professionally with internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and client representatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or technology certificate in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related field is preferred.
- 2 to 3 years of field experience in civil construction, heavy civil construction, infrastructure, marine works, or related construction projects is preferred.
- Knowledge of civil drawings, specifications, construction methods, and field documentation is an asset.
- Experience with civil works such as excavation, grading, concrete, utilities, roadworks, drainage, and heavy equipment coordination is preferred.
- Basic understanding of safety, quality control, and construction site procedures.
Skills and Competencies

- Ability to read and understand basic civil drawings and construction documents.

- Valid driver’s licence is required.
Further Details
- Project Location: Gingolx, BC.
- Project Name: Gingolx Marina/ Bridge project. Location--two hours’ drive from Terrace BC.
- This is fly in fly out position on a 2 weeks on and 1 week off rotation.
- Duration: 1 to 2 year plus
- Work shift: 10-12 hrs per day.
- Onsite trailer accommodations with full facilities provided. Including private cooking facilities.
- As this is a fly in and out position, the employer is responsible for booking flights from BC/Alberta hubs including Calgary/ Edmonton/ Vancouver/ Kamloops/Prince George.
Pay: $75,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
