We are currently seeking 3 Drill Operators to support our operations in Waterloo, ON & other areas across Southwestern Ontario.
Job Overview:
As a Drill Operator at NFTC Telecom, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground conduit for fibre optic networks. This is a critical role in the construction of our telecommunications infrastructure, requiring technical expertise, precision, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience operating drilling equipment in construction or a related field and will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team to deliver high-quality results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drill Operation: Safely operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground conduits for fibre optic networks, ensuring accurate alignment and proper depth.
- Site Preparation & Setup: Prepare job sites by conducting assessments, clearing paths, and ensuring the proper setup of drilling rigs and associated equipment.
- Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Maintain and troubleshoot drilling equipment, ensuring that machinery operates efficiently and reliably throughout the project.
- Conduit Installation: Manage the installation of conduit through drilled holes, ensuring that it is free of damage and appropriately positioned for future fibre optic cable installation.
- Safety Compliance: Strictly follow health and safety regulations and operational procedures to ensure safe working conditions for yourself and your team.
- Documentation: Keep accurate records of work performed, including daily logs, materials used, and job progress through Arc GIS field maps.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other technicians, GIS specialists, and project managers to coordinate drilling activities with other installation processes.
- Problem Solving: Identify and resolve any issues that may arise during drilling, including encountering rocks, obstacles, or other site-related challenges.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- 2+ Years of Experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment or in a similar construction-based role.
- Full Ontario Driver’s Licence (G) (mandatory) and a clean driving record for travel to various job sites across Southwestern Ontario (primarily North of London).
- Technical Knowledge of HDD machinery, equipment setup, and operation.
- Physical Stamina & Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle physically demanding tasks and work with heavy equipment in varied environmental conditions.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot drilling equipment and overcome challenges in the field.
- Strong Communication Skills to effectively communicate with team members, supervisors, and clients.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage materials, tools, and documentation in an efficient manner.
- Safety Awareness: A strong commitment to maintaining a safe working environment, including the proper use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols.
Desirable:
- Experience with Underground Construction or Drilling Equipment (specifically HDD rigs).
- Training or Certifications related to horizontal directional drilling, construction, or equipment operation.
- Experience in Fibre Optic Infrastructure (e.g., knowledge of fibre optic network construction and cable installation).
