Technical Director – Community & Recreational Coach Development

Time Commitment: Approximately 5–10 hours per week during the outdoor and indoor seasons, with reduced hours during the off-season. At least 70% of working time will be spent directly supporting teams, coaches, and player development activities.

The Role
EMSA South is seeking a Technical Director, Community & Recreational Coach Development, to support coaches and players within our community soccer programs.
As part of our commitment to enhancing coach education and player development, we are expanding our technical leadership team and have two positions available. Each Technical Director will be assigned a specific geographic area within EMSA South while working collaboratively to ensure consistent program delivery and technical standards across the organization.
The primary purpose of this role is to provide mentorship, education, and technical support to coaches, helping them create positive, development-focused environments for players. By investing in coach development, we strengthen the player experience and encourage lifelong participation in soccer.
This position is ideal for an experienced coach who enjoys mentoring others and working directly with teams. The successful candidate will support both new and experienced coaches through observations, feedback, demonstrations, and ongoing guidance while helping implement EMSA South’s technical vision within the community game.

Position Summary
The Technical Director serves as the primary technical resource for coaches within their assigned geographic area. The role focuses on coach education, player development, program quality, technical staff supervision, and the implementation of EMSA South’s coaching standards.

Key Responsibilities
Coach Development & Mentorship
- Serve as the primary technical resource for community and recreational coaches within the assigned area.
- Observe each team’s practices and/or games one to three times per season and provide constructive feedback.
- Provide enhanced mentorship and support for first-time and novice coaches.
- Develop and lead pre-season coaches’ meetings to establish expectations, share resources, and provide technical guidance.
- Support coaches in addressing technical, player, and parent-related concerns in a professional manner.
- Research, coordinate, and deliver coach education opportunities throughout the season.
Player Development & Program Leadership
- Collaborate with EMSA South technical staff to develop and maintain training standards and curriculum for U9–U17 community programs.
- Support the implementation of Canada Soccer Grassroots Standards and Long-Term Player Development principles.
- Assist in the design, coordination, and oversight of programming for U9–U13 age groups in collaboration with the Program Director and Technical Team.
- Work directly with teams and players to support individual and collective development objectives.
Technical Staff Supervision
- Supervise and support assigned technical trainers.
- Coordinate scheduling, professional development, and performance expectations for technical staff.
- Review and approve administrative requirements, including timesheet submissions and related documentation.
Quality Assurance & Reporting
- Develop and administer end-of-season coach evaluations and surveys to assess program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Monitor coaching standards and program delivery throughout the season.
- Provide regular reports and recommendations to the Program Director regarding coach development initiatives, player development outcomes, and program performance.
- Contribute information and updates for presentation to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.

Preferred Qualifications
Required
- Extensive soccer coaching experience.
- Strong leadership, mentorship, and communication skills.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and support to volunteer coaches.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Willingness to attend evening practices, games, and occasional weekend events throughout the season.
- Valid Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Preferred
- Canada Soccer Children’s Diploma or willingness to work toward certification.
- Completion of Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education courses.
- Canada Soccer C Licence or B Licence.
- Safe Sport Certification.
- Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders certification.
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

Working Relationships
In this role, you will work closely with athletes, families, coaches, volunteers, and EMSA South staff. You will also collaborate with fellow Technical Directors to ensure alignment in programming, coach support, and player development across the organization.
