Position Summary
The Shredder Assistant Operator reports to the Shredder Operations Supervisor and is responsible for assisting in the safe and efficient operation of the metal shredding system and related equipment. This position supports shredder production by monitoring material flow, identifying contaminants, maintaining housekeeping standards, and assisting with routine inspections and maintenance activities. The Shredder Assistant Operator must ensure all duties are performed in compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
This position operates under flexible parameters. The primary goal is to achieve excellence in safety, productivity, equipment reliability, and environmental compliance. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently reduces accidents, minimizes downtime, and increases profitability.
Essential Functions
Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
- Strictly adhere to all company Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures.
- Maintain a safe work environment for employees, contractors, customers, and visitors.
- Wear and properly utilize all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and equipment deficiencies.
Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
- Assist with the operation of the shredder system and downstream processing equipment.
- Monitor incoming material and remove prohibited or hazardous items before processing.
- Observe material flow and notify the operator of blockages, unusual conditions, or equipment issues.
- Assist with startup, shutdown, and operational checks of the shredder system.
- Maintain clear communication with equipment operators and supervisors.
- Perform general labor duties as required to support shredder operations.
- Assist with inventory and housekeeping tasks throughout the shredder area.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Conduct routine inspections of conveyors, magnets, picking stations, and shredder-related equipment.
- Assist maintenance personnel during repairs, shutdowns, and preventive maintenance activities.
- Clean equipment, work areas, and surrounding grounds to maintain safe operating conditions.
- Report equipment malfunctions, leaks, abnormal noises, or damage to the appropriate supervisor.
- Assist in clearing jams and removing debris following established lockout/tagout procedures.
Job Conditions
This position is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and industrial environments. Physical hazards including noise, dust, vibration, fumes, moving equipment, and heavy machinery are present throughout the shredder operation. Safety footwear, hearing protection, respiratory protection, face shields, and additional PPE must be worn as required.
Workloads may vary depending on production demands, equipment downtime, and maintenance requirements. The position requires flexibility and adaptability, particularly during peak operating periods, scheduled shutdowns, and emergency maintenance situations. Overtime, weekend, and holiday work may be required.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
Ability to:
- Stand and walk for up to 12 hours per shift.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Climb ladders, stairs, and access platforms safely.
- Bend, crouch, kneel, and stoop frequently.
- Work on uneven surfaces and around heavy equipment.
- Reach overhead and at arm's length as required.
- Handle tools, hoses, and equipment continuously.
- Communicate effectively through speech and hearing in a high-noise environment.
- Maintain visual awareness of equipment, personnel, and potential hazards.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and continuous situational awareness while working independently and as part of a team.
