Job Summary
The Directional Driller (HDD) is responsible for operating and guiding horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground telecom conduit safely and efficiently. This role involves steering the drill head, reading locating equipment, and coordinating with crew members to ensure accurate bore paths and successful conduit installation.
Competitive Wage rate- $38.00 to $43.00 Per hour with LOA(if applicable)
Key Responsibilities
Operate and steer HDD drills for the installation of telecom conduit and utilities
Read and interpret bore plans, utility locates, and project drawings
Track and maintain drill head alignment using locating systems (walk-over systems)
Coordinate with locator and crew to ensure proper bore path and avoid existing utilities
Perform pre-drilling checks and ensure proper setup of equipment
Mix and manage drilling fluids (mud) to maintain bore stability
Monitor ground conditions and adjust drilling techniques as needed
Complete daily reports, bore logs, and production tracking
Troubleshoot drilling issues such as returns loss, obstructions, or deviations
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company procedures
Perform basic maintenance and inspections on drilling equipment
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum 3 years of experience in HDD or underground utility installation
Experience operating directional drills (Vermeer, or similar)
Strong understanding of underground utility locating and safe digging practices
Valid driver’s license (AZ/ARZ considered an asset)
Certifications such as First Aid, Ground Disturbance, or Utility Safety preferred
Pay: $38.00-$43.00 per hour
