Job Summary
A Utility Locator plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of excavation activities, protecting underground infrastructure, and maintaining public and worker safety. Through the use of specialized equipment, adherence to regulatory standards, effective communication, and detailed documentation, Utility Locators support safe, efficient, and compliant construction and maintenance operations. Their work not only prevents costly damages and service disruptions but also upholds the integrity of essential services across communities.
Job Requirements
- Previous experience in utility locating or related field (preferred)
- Understanding of utility locating technology and equipment
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and mapping
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- A valid drivers license with a clean driving record
- The ability to work outside in all weather and ground conditions
- Capable of working outside regular working hours as well as work areas
Key Responsibilities
Utility Locates:
- Conduct accurate public and private utility locates by identifying the precise location of buried utilities
- Follow regulatory guidelines such as but not limited to Bill 8 and CGA Best Practices to ensure safety and compliance
Field locating and Equipment Operation:
- Use a range of specialized tools, including electromagnetic utility locators, GPR, GPS, and utility mapping records to confirm the location of underground assets
- Maintain all equipment in good working conditions and report any deficiencies
Marking Underground Utilities:
- Visibly mark the location of underground utilities on the surface using the specified colour codes used to represent the various utility types
- Ensure all field markings are clear, and accurate to avoid any accidental damage during excavation
- Take precautions to avoid damaging hard surfaces while applying field markings
Excavation Risk Assessment:
- Provide detailed excavation risk information to contractors and utility companies by means of utility sketches as directed by company procedures and policies
- Communicate any known or potential risks and special precautions needed for excavation in or near the designated work area
Record Keeping and Reporting:
- Document all utility locations on clear and accurate sketches
- Report and document any discrepancies found in the field to a supervisor or the utility company as directed in the companies procedures and policies
- Ensure all paperwork is complete, accurate, and concise prior to submitting it to contractors, utility owners, or other stakeholders
Problem solving and Troubleshooting:
- Investigate and resolve any discrepancies found between utility mapping and the location of utilizes prior to completing the locate
- Utilize problem solving skills to address challenges encountered in congested areas or areas with inadequate utility mapping
Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with contractors, utility representatives, and the public to establish work areas, coordinate schedules, and report findings
- Respond to contractors, utility representatives, and stakeholders requests in a timely manner and assist with any follow-up inquiries as required
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all work is done in compliance with company, local, provincial, and federal safety regulations
- Adhere to all company policies, as well as local traffic laws and regulations, to ensure safety and compliance during field operations
- Promote safe excavation practices mitigate damage to infrastructure and property, while ensuring the safety of the public and workers
Ongoing Professional Development:
- Stay updated on the latest technologies and industry standards
- Participate in training programs, workshops, certifications to improve skills and knowledge pertinent to the industry
Flexibility in performing additional duties aligned with organizational priorities
