GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
This position reports to the TFN Forestry Foreman, and is also accountable to the Economic & Sustainable Development Director.
GOAL:
The Forestry Heavy Equipment Operator performs a variety of duties related to reforestation and to the management and improvement of forest lands.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate excavator in reforestation areas to perform scarification;
- Operate excavator for the purpose of road building;
- Maintain and repair excavator and other forest maintenance equipment;
- Performs important tree “thinning” to reduce the number of standing young trees;
- Communicates with other crew members about work progress and safety;
- Ensure equipment is fueled at the start/end of each day.
- Perform daily preventive maintenance on assigned vehicle and report any defects or repairs needed.
- Perform weekly greasing/washing of vehicle.
- Ensure assigned vehicle is free from rolling debris, dust & other obstructions in cab/driver area on a regular basis.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Fifth wheel training heavy equipment training; minimum 3 years experience operating machinery
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have valid Quebec Driver’s license
- First Aid training would be an asset
- Ability to understand and interpret directives
- Knowledge of health and safety standards
- Ability to act quickly and use good judgment
