Overview
Our client is a Toronto-based family office managing a diverse and complex portfolio of investments across multiple entities. They are seeking an experienced Controller to lead all accounting and financial reporting activities for the group. This role is ideal for a hands-on, technically strong accounting professional who thrives in smaller, dynamic environments and is comfortable navigating complex investment structures. The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy, transparency, and control across the organization while acting as a trusted partner to ownership and senior stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes across multiple legal entities
Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards (ASPE and/or IFRS, as applicable)
Ensure timely, accurate, and consistent reporting across all entities
Oversee accounting for a broad range of investments (e.g., private equity, real estate, marketable securities, structured investments, intercompany arrangements)
Manage fair value measurements, capital activity, distributions, and complex journal entries
Work closely with external advisors on valuation, tax structuring, and investment reporting
Manage intercompany transactions, reconciliations, and eliminations
Maintain entity-level financial integrity while supporting consolidated reporting
Ensure proper documentation and controls across entities
Establish and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies
Identify opportunities to improve processes, reporting efficiency, and system usage
Act as a key point of contact for auditors, tax advisors, and external consultants
Provide oversight and mentorship to junior accounting staff
Partner closely with ownership, investment teams, and external advisors
Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders
CPA designation an asset
10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a family offices, investment firms, private equity/asset management, real estate or complex holding structures
Strong technical accounting expertise, particularly in investment and consolidation accounting
Experience operating in smaller, entrepreneurial, multi-entity environments
Advanced Excel skills; experience with accounting systems used in private or investment settings is an asset
High attention to detail with the ability to see the bigger picture
Hands-on, accountable, and comfortable “owning” the numbers
Discreet, professional, and trusted with highly sensitive information
Confident navigating ambiguity and complex dynamics
Strong communicator with the ability to partner with sophisticated stakeholders
