Mandate
The Lead Coach, Sprints, Jumps & Hurdles is responsible for leading the Calgary Spartans Track Club's sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws program for the Senior group. This role combines athlete coaching with program leadership by designing and delivering high-quality training, mentoring coaches, supporting athlete development, fostering a positive team culture, and working collaboratively with the Head Coach and Athlete Development Coach to ensure a consistent and successful program.
Coaching Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement pre-season, in-season, and off-season training programs for the sprints, jumps, and hurdles athletes.
- Plan and conduct group practices; may independently coach a specific track specialty within the broader team program.
- Assist in identifying and recruiting prospective athletes in accordance with Athletics Alberta regulations and standards.
- Provide general guidance to athletes on key sport-related topics such as nutrition, injury prevention, and recovery strategies.
- Lead athletes in setting and tracking measurable, realistic short-, medium-, and long-term goals.
- Teach proper biomechanics and technical skills, using technology to deliver high-quality, individualized feedback. Refer athletes to other Spartan coaches for specialized training as appropriate.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and safe training environment that supports athlete development and well-being.
- Prepare athletes for competition by communicating schedules and attending local and, when appropriate, out-of-town meets, ensuring proper supervision at all times.
- Ensure all required approvals and documentation are completed for out-of-town travel, including board approvals.
- Maintain effective communication with parents to support athlete development and engagement.
- Mentor and collaborate with other Calgary Spartans coaches to enhance club programs, share knowledge, and support athlete success at all levels.
- Uphold and model compliance with Club Policies and Procedures and the Athletics Alberta Code of Conduct.
- Foster and promote a strong, inclusive team culture that aligns with the values and goals of the Calgary Spartans Track & Field Club.
Lead Coach Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to Calgary Spartans coaches working with sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throwing events across both senior and athlete development groups by providing constructive feedback, sharing best practices, and supporting continuous professional growth.
- Collaborate with the Athlete Development Coach to design and support appropriate training programs for athletes in sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws.
- Support the Head Coach to ensure a well-rounded and balanced training program for all athletes.
- Participate in the evaluation of athletes in the Athlete Development group, helping to determine the appropriate timing, training group, and event focus for transition into senior-level programs.
Required:
- Minimum 3-5 years progressive track and field coaching
- Strong understanding of long term athlete development
- Current Police Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
- Athletics Alberta Coaching Membership
- Making Ethical Decisions training. Other ongoing professional development may be required as Athletics Alberta coaching standards evolve

Skills:
- A broad knowledge of track and field; preferentially with experience in sprints, hurdles, jump and throw events
- Good instructional and coaching skills
- Willingness to work with other coaches and Board members in a team environment
Pay: $1,000.00-$1,300.00 per month
Work Location: In person
