About the VSO School of Music
VSO School of Music, founded in 2010, is a 25,000 square foot state-of-the-art music school located adjacent to the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Vancouver. With a mission to enrich lives through the joy of learning, playing and performing the world’s great music, the VSO School develops experiences that are accessible to all, regardless of age, ability, playing level or economic circumstances; and by nurturing creative and engaged members of society through achievement in the musical arts. With a roster of over 1900 students, the School is proud to offer individual or group instruction by members of the Vancouver Symphony and other high-quality music educators.
The school also features a performance theatre (Pyatt Hall) and Reception space which sees a wide range of arts, entertainment, and corporate groups utilizing the space for performances, recordings, and special events.
About the VSO
Founded in 1919, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada, and the largest performing arts organization in Western Canada. The VSO is one of a handful of orchestras worldwide that have its own music school: the VSO School of Music. The organization delivers extensive education programs reaching more than 50,000 young people annually, and community engagement initiatives that reach a further 100,000+ people. Maestro Otto Tausk is the VSO’s Music Director and the Artistic Advisor of the VSO School of Music.
Job Description: Facilities Attendant
The Part-Time Facilities Attendant supports the day-to-day operations, presentation, and basic events needs of the VSO School of Music. Working during operating hours, this role complements regular staff and cleaners by focusing on detailing, responsiveness, and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
This position requires a proactive, detail-oriented individual who takes pride in maintaining high facility standards in an active educational and performance setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning & Facility Upkeep
Perform routine and rotational deep-cleaning tasks (e.g., baseboards, vents, corners, grout)
Maintain cleanliness of high-traffic areas throughout the day
Daily spot cleaning of floors, walls, furniture, surfaces, and interior glass
Operational Support & Events
Reset rooms (chairs, music stands, and equipment) daily to required layouts
Move, setup, and take down instruments and A/V equipment
Assist with general event setup and takedown, including at other venues
Move and reconfigure audience and performer seating
Customer Service & Environment
Contribute to a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
Interact professionally with staff, students, and visitors
Health & Safety Responsibilities
Follow WorkSafeBC regulations and all site safety procedures
Use cleaning equipment and products safely and appropriately
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Participate in safety training and orientations as required
Qualifications & Requirements:
Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Some knowledge of musical instruments and A/V equipment is an asset
High attention to detail and pride in maintaining facility standards
Physically capable of standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 60 lbs
Previous janitorial, facilities, or cleaning experience is an asset
Professional and respectful, customer-focused mindset
Must successfully complete a vulnerable sector police information check
Valid BC Driver’s License required
Working Conditions
Part-time hours, including required weekend shifts
Occasional evening work may be required
Work is performed in a busy, public-facing arts and education facility
Frequent movement, lifting, and physical activity required
