In this role, you’ll build on your underwriting experience, working closely with brokers and clients while developing your skills across a range of commercial risks. - Risk Assessment: Evaluate and underwrite commercial property and casualty risks by analyzing COPE data, operational exposures, coverage requirements, and loss history. Assess risk quality for realty and construction risks, identify key exposures, and determine appropriate coverage structures and pricing to support profitable growth.
- Policy Development: Structure insurance policies to meet specific risk profile needs including appropriate limits, deductibles, extensions, and endorsements. Ensuring coverages and wordings reflect key exposures identified during the risk assessment process.
- Pricing: Perform detailed rating analysis to determine appropriate premiums based on risk characteristics, exposure data, market conditions and internal pricing guidelines, while applying underwriting judgement to align with the company’s goals.
- Client & Broker Interaction: Build and maintain strong relationships with both brokers and clients by providing responsive service, clear underwriting rationale, and communication. Collaborate on new business opportunities and renewals, while creating long term partnerships for growth.
- Compliance & Collaboration: Cross collaborate with internal teams such as actuary, claims, and accounting to improve processes, pricing, and overall portfolio performance.
- Minimum of 2 years’ of commercial underwriting experience
- General Insurance License Level 1 or 2 (or willingness to obtain within 90 days, on us)
- Post-secondary education and/or CIP designation (considered an asset)
- Working knowledge of commercial property & casualty underwriting practices and market trends
- Strong communicator and collaborative team player with a drive to grow
- Ability to thrive under deadlines while managing multiple priorities
- Ability to work across all levels, including brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex information and make informed decisions
- High level of attention to detail, organization skills and ability to prioritize tasks
- High degree of emotional intelligence and empathy
Within six months, you are a reliable underwriting partner who manages a portfolio of moderately complex commercial risks, delivers accurate, guideline-based decisions, and builds strong relationships with brokers and clients that support profitable growth.
- Assess and underwrite new and renewal business with increasing technical accuracy
- Deliver competitive, well-structured pricing and policy terms within established guidelines and risk appetite
- Build responsive, credible relationships with brokers and clients, developing confidence in your guidance
- Collaborate effectively with claims and actuarial teams to support informed decisions
- Manage priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrate continued growth in underwriting judgment and expand ability to handle more complex risks over time
