About Fontaine Site Services Inc.
Fontaine Site Services Inc. is a civil construction contractor specializing in earthworks, underground utilities, roadworks, shoring, demolition, and site servicing projects throughout Metro Vancouver and the Sea-to-Sky region. We are looking for an experienced Mainline Excavator Operator to join our growing team.
Position Overview
The Mainline Excavator Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators on civil infrastructure projects, with a focus on underground utility installation, trenching, mainline pipe work, road construction, and site servicing. The successful candidate will work closely with foremen, pipe layers, labourers, truck drivers, surveyors, and project supervisors to complete work accurately, safely, and productively.
This position requires strong experience working around utilities, trench boxes, deep excavations, pipe crews, and tight urban job sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate excavators safely and efficiently for mainline civil construction work.
- Excavate trenches for sanitary, storm, water, hydro, telecom, and other underground utilities.
- Work closely with pipe layers and ground crews during pipe installation, bedding, backfill, and compaction.
- Maintain proper grades, trench widths, slopes, and excavation limits.
- Excavate around existing utilities with care and precision.
- Load trucks, move materials, place bedding, backfill trenches, and perform general earthworks.
- Assist with roadworks, site grading, bulk excavation, shoring support, and civil infrastructure installations.
- Read and understand basic civil drawings, grades, offsets, and site instructions.
- Follow directions from the foreman, superintendent, and project management team.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Keep equipment clean, organized, and in good operating condition.
- Maintain a safe work area for ground crews, pedestrians, traffic, and nearby structures.
- Follow all company safety policies, WorkSafeBC regulations, and site-specific safety requirements.
- Participate in toolbox meetings and hazard assessments.
- Support the crew as needed when not operating equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience operating excavators on mainline civil construction projects.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation and trenching operations.
- Experience working with pipe crews, trench boxes, deep excavations, and live utilities.
- Ability to maintain grade and work accurately around existing infrastructure.
- Comfortable working in tight urban environments and active construction sites.
- Ability to communicate clearly with foremen, labourers, pipe layers, and other operators.
- Strong awareness of safety, equipment limits, ground conditions, and site hazards.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s licence preferred.
- Equipment operator certification or relevant training is an asset.
Preferred Experience
- Minimum 5 years of civil construction experience in Metro Vancouver or similar urban environments.
- Experience with sanitary, storm, and water main installation.
- Experience working around shoring, trench boxes, utilities, traffic, and confined work areas.
- GPS, laser, or grade control experience is an asset.
- Experience operating various excavator sizes is an asset.
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify equipment issues early.

Working Conditions
- Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Projects may involve deep excavations, active roadways, confined work areas, and live utilities.
- Must be able to work full-time hours, with overtime as required.
- Travel between job sites in the Lower Mainland and Sea-to-Sky region may be required.
Compensation
40-45$/h . Compensation will be based on experience, skill level, and ability. Fontaine Site Services Inc. offers competitive wages and the opportunity to work with a growing civil construction company on a variety of challenging projects.
