Job Description:
The Foundational Learning Support Worker provides direct literacy and numeracy support to students in Kindergarten through Grade 7 who live in the Shuswap community and attend schools within the Windermere Zone, with support extended to other grades as needed. Working closely with the Shuswap Band Education Department, school staff, and caregivers, this role delivers targeted educational interventions to individuals and small groups, helps strengthen student learning outcomes, and promotes a positive, culturally safe learning environment. The position also supports families by providing resources and strategies to encourage learning at home.
Responsibilities:
· Support students' academic, social, and emotional needs in collaboration with school staff and under the direction of the Student Navigator.
· Facilitate literacy and numeracy interventions for individual students and small groups.
· Supervise and facilitate after-school homework support programs.
· Support student independence through the use of appropriate accommodations, tools, and learning strategies.
· Collaborate with caregivers to provide literacy and numeracy resources and strategies that support learning at home.
· Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards, ethics, and expectations when working with children and families.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Post-secondary education in a related field such as Education, Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Counselling, or a similar discipline.
· Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, abilities, or disabilities.
· Additional training in supporting students with diverse abilities is considered an asset.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
· Knowledge of confidentiality requirements and professional boundaries.
· Understanding of the Shuswap Band community, culture, and Secwépemc values.
· Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
· Ability to de-escalate situations and respond to students with empathy, respect, and adaptability.
· Commitment to providing culturally safe, proactive, and trauma-informed support to children and youth.
