Job Summary
The Human Resources Generalist supports all day-to-day HR functions within a manufacturing plant environment. This role acts as a key liaison between employees, supervisors, and management, ensuring consistent application of HR policies, legislative compliance, and effective people practices. The HR Generalist plays a hands-on role in recruitment, employee relations, health and safety coordination, payroll support, performance management, and HR process improvement. This role will be key in fostering a positive workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Workforce Support
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee HR-related inquiries and concerns.
- Provide guidance to supervisors on performance management, attendance management, and progressive discipline.
- Assist with workplace investigations, conflict resolution, and policy interpretation.
- Support onboarding, orientation, and offboarding processes for hourly and salaried employees.
Recruitment & Talent Management
- Coordinate full-cycle recruitment for plant roles, including job postings, screening, interviews, and offers.
- Partner with hiring managers to assess workforce needs and staffing plans.
- Support succession planning and internal promotions where applicable.
HR Compliance & Policy Administration
- Ensure compliance with Ontario Employment Standards Act (ESA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Human Rights Code, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records in HRIS and personnel files.
- Assist with policy updates and communication to employees and leadership.
Health, Safety & Attendance
- Support joint health and safety initiatives in collaboration with plant leadership.
- Assist with incident reporting, WSIB claims, and return-to-work programs.
- Monitor attendance, support absence management, and track related metrics.
Payroll, Benefits & Administration
- Support payroll processing by ensuring accuracy of employee data, time and attendance records, and employment changes.
- Administer benefits enrollment, changes, and employee inquiries.
- Support annual compensation reviews and bonus administration as required.
Training & Performance Management
- Coordinate training programs, including compliance, safety, and leadership development.
- Support the performance review process and employee development initiatives.
- Track training completion and certification requirements.
Continuous Improvement & Reporting
- Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, systems, and employee experience.
- Prepare HR reports and metrics for management, including turnover, absenteeism, and headcount.
- Support HR projects aligned with operational and business objectives.
Illustrative Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Time-to-fill for open manufacturing and support roles
- Employee turnover and retention rates
- Attendance and absenteeism trends and rates
- Compliance audit results (ESA, OHSA, internal policies)
- Accuracy and timeliness of HR documentation and payroll inputs
- Completion rates for mandatory training and safety programs
- Employee relations issue resolution timelines
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- Minimum 3–5 years of HR Generalist experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Working knowledge of Ontario employment legislation and workplace safety requirements
- Experience supporting hourly workforces and shift-based operations
- CHRP designation (or working toward) is an asset
