JOB SUMMARY: The PEACE Counsellor provides psycho educational programming, support, education and advocacy for children who have witnessed abuse or family conflict and change. This individual also provides emotional and parenting support to parents. Designs, promotes and delivers the PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment) program.
BCGEU General Services membership required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related human / social services field (preferably child and youth care specialization)
- Two-year recent related child and youth care experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Excellent public relations / communications skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of staff and other members of the community
- Current BC driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
- Current First Aid with CPR
- Use of reliable insured personal vehicle is required for this position
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interview people served, prepares case histories, and outlines services provided by the organization. Refer person served to more appropriate programs when needed
- Assesses the impact of witnessing abuse on the child, the group readiness of the child and the support needs of the abused parent.
- Conducts individual sessions with the child and or their family using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution and psycho-educations; provides emotional support
- Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to family violence. Provides presentations and public awareness activities about services and issues
- Provides individual sessions directly to the child and / or family such as conflict resolution, short-term crisis intervention, and parenting skill building. Plans, prepares and conducts anger and behavior management counseling to person served on a one-to-one or group basis by performing duties such as providing feedback on participants’ behavior, teaching coping techniques and adaptive behavior, and the provision of guidance and support.
- Provide service in a respectful, empathetic and person served centered manner while maintaining boundaries
- Develop parental awareness and assess the impact of family violence both for children and themselves
- Plans, organizes and implements short term, developmental and issue specific interventions and activities to meet program participants’ needs. This may include social and recreational activities within the community that would provide life skills, social and interpersonal skill building, and positive behaviours through activities.
- Provides input to the designated supervisory personnel and other designated personnel for the development of program participant service plans.
- Accompany and / or transports program participants to and from program activities.
- Maintains reports, records and statistics such as intake, progress, and discharge in accordance with established program policies and procedures.
