The CNC Programmer is responsible for supporting precision manufacturing operations through the setup, programming, and optimization of CNC lathes, grinding machines, and multi-axis machining centers. This role ensures the efficient production of high-quality components by developing robust machining processes, troubleshooting performance issues, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with cross-functional teams, the CNC Programmer contributes to maintaining production standards, meeting specified run times, and upholding quality and safety requirements within a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Perform initial setup and programming of CNC lathes, grinding machines and multi axis machine centers (e.g. 3,4 and 5 axis)
- Ensure efficient production of quality parts by completing in-process and final checks on first off parts
- Ensure all manufacturing tasks are completed in accordance with specified run times
- Edit and adjust programs as necessary to optimize and/or correct machine performance (experience with MasterCam preferred).
- Design, develop and document manufacturing processes
- Design and develop tools and fixtures to support new and continuous improvement projects
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make adjustments as required
- Provide support for the implementation of lean initiatives
- Select proper tooling and fixtures for efficient production
- Provides mentorships/guidance to ME Level 1, Interns, and CNC Programmers
- Support continuous improvement objectives
- Other tasks as assigned
- College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering discipline
- 10+ years’ experience in CNC Programmer role, including 2-5 axis milling, CNC lathe/turning as well as internal and external grinding.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and understand GD&T
- Experience developing detailed tool drawings utilizing geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Proficiency in the use of 3D parametric solid modelling, CAD packages, preferably Solidworks
- Knowledge of MasterCAM and G-code programming, editing and optimizing CNC programs
- Experience utilizing lean manufacturing principles (Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Kanban, and poka-yoke)
- Experience working in an ISO certified environment
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
- An exceptional team player with experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Familiarity with ITAR and controlled goods is an asset
- Knowledge of Epicor MRP system is an asset
- OACETT certification is an asset
- PAL/RPAL license is an asset
- Internal – (Production, Quality, Manufacturing Engineering)
- External – (Tool, Fixture and Machine Suppliers)
- Office environment – specify activities (programming, drafting, sitting, problem solving, analysis)
- Manufacturing Environment (PPE Required) – Periodic loading and unloading of CNC fixturing lifting (approx. 25 lbs), sitting 60% of time while standing 40%, safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection
