Job Title: Seasonal Agricultural Assistant/ Safety Coordinator
Department: Agriculture Services/ Public works
Reports To: Agricultural Fieldman or Public Works Supervisor
Standard Hours: 40 hours
Department Function: The Agriculture Services Department works under the direction of the Agriculture Service Board. The role of the Agriculture Service Board is to increase awareness of agricultural issues within the municipality.
Position Summary: The primary responsibility of the Seasonal Agricultural assistant is performing the duties of a Seasonal Equipment Operator supporting Agricultural Fieldman in the operation of the Agriculture Department’s summer projects. The Agricultural Assistant will aid in providing leadership for special projects and cover for the Agricultural Fieldman when he or she is unavailable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide project leadership as required.
· Operate light or medium duty seasonal equipment.
· Respond to rate-payer inquiries.
· Aid in the municipal weed and pest inspection programs.
· Perform the daily pre-trip inspections.
· Perform maintenance such as greasing, changing the blades, and washing the equipment.
· Undertaking minor repairs to the equipment.
· Maintaining Mower /Herbicide Application records
· Document weed infestations.
· Picking weeds and Rocks as required.
· Ensuring compliance with Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133 policies, procedures, and health and safety guidelines.
· Any other duties assigned by the Agricultural Fieldman or Public Works Supervisor
Qualifications:
· Class 5 driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract.
· Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
· Hauling trailer and use and positioning of boomers and chains.
· Equipment preventative maintenance (such as hydraulic fluids)
· Knowledge of OH&S requirements and safe work practices.
· Knowledge of weed identification.
Skills Required:
· Ability to interact well with, and respond to, inquiries from employees, management, the Agriculture Service Board, Council, and rate payers. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems.
· Ability to perform minor servicing and repairs.
· Ability to read maps and land locations.
· Ability to communicate with interested landowners and the public about the program.
· Ability to use two-way radios.
· Ability to follow instructions set out in owner’s manuals.
· Ability to monitor traffic while mowing or spraying roadside rights-of-ways.
· Ability to do the same task for long periods of time.
· Ability to ensure that all work-related information is kept confidential an in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
Working Conditions and Physical Environment:
· Subject to working in all outdoor environments (heat, cold, wet, dry/dusty) as well as near bees and other insects and wildlife.
· Exposure to pesticides.
· Operation of different types of vehicles.
· Long periods of sitting and standing.
· Normal working days consist of 8 hours per day; however occasional overtime may be required.
Health and Safety:
There is opportunity to continue working after the summer season as a Health and Safety Officer if interested, proper training can be provided. Duties and responsibilities are -
Assisting Public Works and Administration regarding Safety, Managing the MD's Safety Software, helping with Safety Meeting's, updating emergency response plans, signage, first aid kits, training, policies and bylaws, etc.
