The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is an integral member of the Pediatric Medicine leadership team, supporting the delivery of high-quality, family-centred care within the Pediatric Complex Care and Seasonal Capacity Program at the Stollery Children's Hospital. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead in an innovative and evolving clinical environment, caring for children with medical complexity while helping shape the future of a growing program. Working in partnership with the Unit Manager, interdisciplinary team, patients and families, the AHN provides day-to-day clinical and operational leadership while fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, continuous improvement and staff engagement. This role requires a leader who is comfortable navigating ambiguity, embraces change, and can effectively support teams through periods of transformation while maintaining a strong focus on patient and family-centred care. As an AHN, you will contribute to quality improvement initiatives, patient flow and capacity management, mentorship and staff development, and the implementation of new initiatives that strengthen care delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse who is passionate about leading others, building high-performing teams, and making a meaningful impact in pediatric healthcare.
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
