Nisga’a Valley Health Authority (NVHA) oversees four Health and Wellness facilities located across the Traditional Nisga’a Territory. Located 100 km Northwest of Terrace, bordering British Columbia's rugged Pacific Northwest coast, the Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic lava beds, amazing hot springs, picturesque fjords, sparkling waterfalls, thriving rivers and streams, as well as an excellent, collegial health care team and superb professional working environment.
Under the direction of the Primary Care Nurse Manager or designate and in collaboration as a member of a multidisciplinary team, performs assessments, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care. The RN operates in accordance with the competency guidelines and the full scope of practice within the Standards of Practice as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), as well as agency operating policies and standards and unit-specific protocols.
Responsibilities
1. Plan and deliver appropriate assessment and care to clients/patients presenting to the clinic for primary care or emergency visits.
2. Seeking or referred to the respective clinics for emergency or outpatient treatment.
3. All treatment provided will be in accordance with a medical practitioner’s direction or as experience and sound nursing practice.
4. Performs appropriate physical assessment of clients attended (May include emergent ECG & Lab procedures)
5. Provides nursing interventions that may include, among other things, basic trauma and/or cardiac life support, repair of simple lacerations, irrigations, removal of casts, application of splints, assisting obstetrical emergencies, suture removal and the administration of medications.
6. Ensures appropriate documentation of all treatments administered.
7. Ensures that clinical and emergency equipment and drugs are routinely maintained and replenished as per NVHA policy.
8. Shares on-call duty with the professional health team.
9. Participates in health team and general staff meetings.
10. Assists in the orientation to the department/clinic of other health professionals as required.
11. Act as a resource to other programs and service staff.
12. Other duties as may be assigned and may vary depending on the patient population and staff resources
Qualifications & Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Registered with BCCNM
- Minimum two (2) years of previous clinical experience in a health care facility or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
- ACLS, PALS, BLS-HCP
- Other education (acquired already or willing to obtain): Emergency Nursing Certification, EPICC or other trauma course, Immunization certifications.
- Experience working with First Nations people and communities.
- Experience working from a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive perspective.
- Knowledge of relevant socio-historical events relevant to First Nations people in Canada.
- Current valid Canadian driver’s license and willingness to submit a driver’s abstract.
