We are seeking two Summer Student Mental Health Support Workers to join our team through the Canada Summer Jobs program. This role provides person-centered support to individuals in their homes and community, promoting independence, inclusion, and skill development
Successful candidates will work in a person-centered environment, promoting independence, inclusion, and quality of life while gaining valuable experience in community living and support services.

Support individuals in their homes and within the community to increase independence and promote inclusion

Assist with the development of life skills, including grocery shopping, meal planning, budgeting, communication, transportation use, and accessing community services

Support individuals in setting and achieving goals outlined in their Person-Centered Plans
-
Encourage self-determination, self-advocacy, and personal growth to enhance quality of life
-
Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency or crisis situations (e.g., medical concerns, unsafe environments, emotional distress) in accordance with established protocols

Accompany and/or transport individuals to appointments, including medical and therapeutic services, while following health care plans

Facilitate participation in community programs, social activities, and out-of-town opportunities

Encourage the development of meaningful relationships with peers, community members, and support networks

Provide trauma-informed, person-centered support to individuals with complex needs, including mental health challenges, substance use, or high-risk behaviours

Assist individuals in exploring personal interests and participating in recreational, cultural, or spiritual activities that foster belonging

Connect individuals with community resources such as housing supports, employment services, training programs, and advocacy organizations

Communicate effectively with team members, professionals, and family members as directed

Maintain accurate, factual, and professional documentation, including daily notes and incident reports, in accordance with confidentiality standards

Support daily living activities such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, errands, pet care, and appointment organization

Assist with personal care needs where required, including hygiene, dressing, mobility support, and medication reminders

Administer medications and perform delegated medical tasks (e.g., gastrostomy care, glucose monitoring) in accordance with organizational policies

Promote safety and well-being in all environments, including during community outings and transportation

Follow all health and safety procedures, including emergency and incident response protocols

Work collaboratively with staff and supervisors to ensure continuity of care and effective service delivery
To be eligible under the Canada Summer Jobs program, applicants must:

Be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of employment (students must be 19 due to internal funding policies)

Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection status

Be legally entitled to work in Canada
Qualifications:

Interest in community support, social services, or health care

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle

This candidate shall be considered a casual employee under the FSJACL's BCGEU collective agreement. All applicable terms and conditions of the collective agreement shall apply, including 10.6% pay in lieu of paid holidays and scheduled vacation, and union membership as a condition of employment.
