Role Overview
The Investment Counsellor / Portfolio Manager will be responsible for managing and growing relationships with affluent investors, business owners, professionals, retirees, and families. The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor, delivering discretionary portfolio management, and financial planning guidance.
This role combines client relationship management, investment expertise, business development, and fiduciary advice. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leadership, portfolio managers and operations personnel to deliver an exceptional client experience.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable discussing portfolio construction, retirement planning, tax-efficient wealth strategies, and alternative investments with sophisticated investors.
Key Responsibilities
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for a book of high-net-worth clients.
- Build trusted, long-term relationships with individuals, families, corporations, foundations, and trusts.
- Conduct comprehensive Know-Your-Client (KYC) reviews and ongoing client discovery meetings.
- Develop and maintain Investment Policy Statements tailored to each client's objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity requirements, and time horizon.
- Deliver ongoing portfolio reviews and investment recommendations.
Portfolio Management & Advice
- Provide discretionary portfolio management services in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Construct and oversee client portfolios utilizing ETFs, individual securities, pooled funds, private credit, mortgage funds, and other alternative investments where appropriate.
- Monitor client portfolios and recommend changes based on market conditions, evolving client circumstances, and investment opportunities.
- Communicate investment strategy, performance, and market outlooks in a clear and professional manner.
- Work collaboratively with Celernus' investment team to implement model portfolios and customized solutions.
Business Development
- Develop and cultivate relationships with prospective clients and centres of influence.
- Participate in client events, educational seminars, and business development initiatives.
- Contribute to the growth of the firm's assets under management through referrals, prospecting, and relationship development.
- Assist in developing thought leadership content, market commentary, and educational materials.
Compliance & Fiduciary Responsibility
- Maintain strict adherence to all applicable securities regulations, internal policies, and compliance procedures.
- Ensure client records, suitability documentation, and KYC information remain accurate and current.
- Act at all times in the best interests of clients and in accordance with fiduciary obligations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in wealth management, portfolio management, private client advisory, or a related investment role.
- Registration as an Advising Representative (AR) or eligibility to become registered.
- Strong understanding of portfolio construction, asset allocation, financial planning, and capital markets.
- Demonstrated success developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Commerce, or a related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- CFA Charterholder, CIM, CFP, or equivalent professional designation.
- Experience working with high-net-worth investors
- Familiarity with alternative investments, including private credit, private lending, mortgage funds, and private market strategies.
- Existing network of clients or referral relationships.
- Knowledge of Canadian tax-efficient wealth planning strategies.
Compensation Package
- Salary: $120,000 - $170,000 Commensurate with experience.
- Discretionary bonus program, recurring trailers.
- Benefits package available.
