About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and creative Drawing, Painting & Collage Instructor to lead fun, hands-on visual arts classes for children ages 5–12. The successful candidate will create a welcoming and inspiring environment where children can explore their creativity through a variety of artistic techniques and materials while developing confidence in self-expression.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons in drawing, painting, collage, and mixed-media art.
- Introduce students to a variety of artistic techniques using materials such as pencils, markers, pastels, watercolor, acrylic paint, paper, fabric, and recycled materials.
- Encourage creativity, imagination, and self-expression through age-appropriate projects.
- Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel supported.
- Adapt activities for students of different ages, abilities, and skill levels.
- Manage classroom behavior and ensure a safe learning environment.
- Prepare, organize, and maintain art supplies and materials.
- Showcase student artwork through displays, exhibitions, or end-of-term presentations.
- Communicate with the Program Coordinator regarding student participation and program progress.
- Follow all Burnaby School District policies, safety procedures, and child safeguarding requirements.
QualificationsRequired
- Degree, diploma, certificate, or relevant experience in Visual Arts, Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field.
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience working with children ages 5–12 in educational, camp, after-school, or enrichment settings.
- Experience teaching drawing, painting, collage, or other visual arts activities.
- Strong communication and classroom management skills.
- Ability to inspire creativity and build positive relationships with children.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Emergency First Aid & CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain before starting).
Preferred
- Experience teaching in schools, community centers, or after-school programs.
- Knowledge of various artistic mediums and techniques.
- Experience organizing student art displays or exhibitions.
- Familiarity with inclusive and child-centered teaching approaches.
- Experience working in multicultural and diverse educational environments.
