General Description
The Sipekne'katik Governance Initiative (SGI) Environmental Technologist provides technical expertise and environmental support to the Consultation Department in protecting and advancing Sipekne'katik’s Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. The position evaluates the potential environmental effects of proposed developments on Mi'kmaq lands, waters, resources, and culturally significant areas while supporting Sipekne’katik's consultation, accommodation, and governance processes.
Working under the direction of the SGI Consultation Manager, the Environmental Technologist reviews environmental impact assessments, conducts technical research and field investigations, coordinates environmental monitoring activities, prepares technical reports, supports negotiations, and assists with community engagement. The position works collaboratively with internal departments, community members, Elders, Knowledge Holders, governments, consultants, industry proponents, and regulatory agencies to ensure environmental stewardship and the protection of Mi'kmaq rights, interests, and traditional knowledge.
Responsibilities
Environmental Assessment and Technical Review (50%)
- Evaluate potential impacts to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, culturally significant areas, traditional land use, fisheries, wildlife, water resources, and the natural environment.
- Prepare technical comments and recommendations for consultation responses.
- Conduct environmental site visits and field assessments.
- Review baseline studies, environmental monitoring reports, mitigation plans, and cumulative effects assessments.
- Identify environmental risks and recommend mitigation measures.
- Maintain awareness of evolving environmental legislation, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and coordinate submissions, correspondence, reports, records, memos, presentations, agendas, and work plans for various consultation files.
- Use expertise to review and provide support and specific recommendations to Sipekne’katik Chief and Council.
- Assist in developing opportunities for Sipekne’katik to partner with different organizations to be meaningfully engaged and involved in environmental and conservation activities throughout Mi’kma’ki.
- Review requests for consultation and enforce consultation fee schedule.
Consultation Support (30%)
- Assist the Senior Environmentalist in the planning, coordination and facilitation of consultation events, meetings, and workshops relating to consultation.
- Support the implementation of the SGI consultation protocol on all environmental files submitted to the Consultation Department to ensure the prioritization of Sipekne’katik’s inherent Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and Titles.
- Collaborate closely with governmental organizations to help build and foster strong and sustainable relationships.
- Support SGI communications to the community by providing information relevant to consultation activities.
Data Management and technical Reporting (10%)
- Maintain environmental databases, mapping information, and technical records.
- Compile environmental monitoring data and technical findings.
- Prepare technical reports, briefing notes, maps, presentations, and correspondence.
- Assist with maintaining GIS information and spatial datasets where applicable.
- Support regulatory reporting and documentation
Community Communication and Education (5%)
- Assist with community engagement sessions regarding environmental projects and consultation initiatives.
- Prepare educational materials and community presentations.
- Respond to environmental inquiries from community members.
- Support knowledge-sharing initiatives involving Elders and Knowledge Holders.
- Promote awareness of environmental stewardship and Treaty Rights protection
Perform Other Duties (5%)
- Participate in other relevant initiatives to support the interests of Sipekne’katik.
Qualifications and Experience/Skills
- Diploma or Degree in Environmental Technology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Geography, or related discipline. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in environmental assessment, environmental monitoring, natural resource management, or Indigenous consultation.
- Experience reviewing environmental impact assessments and regulatory documentation.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is strongly preferred.
- Field experience involving environmental monitoring, sampling, or habitat assessments is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and the Duty to Consult.
- Understanding of environmental assessment legislation and regulatory processes.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques and field investigations.
- Familiarity with Mi'kmaq traditional ecological knowledge and stewardship principles.
- Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
- Ability to interpret scientific studies, engineering reports, and technical documents.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and general office equipment.
- GIS and mapping (ESRI products) would be considered an asset.
- Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Must be willing to travel periodically throughout Atlantic Canada if needed.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A Criminal Record check is required.
Working Conditions
- 5 days per week, Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm daily, 35 hours weekly
