Position Summary
Under the direction of the Manager, Program & Support Services, the Recreational Therapy Assistant (TR Assistant/TRA) participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation and leisure services for all residents at The Ontario-Finnish Resthome Association. These services are provided in accordance with the individual resident’s care plan, OFRA’s policies and procedures, and the Ministry of Health – Long Term Care standards. The Recreational Therapy Assistant works collaboratively with the Registered Recreational Therapist (R/TRO, CTRS), and other members of the health care team, in order to provide quality care to residents and their families.
Responsibilities:
· Conducts group sessions and/or 1:1’s with residents as outlined in the monthly calendar of activities for residents.
· Participates in the planning of special events and outings.
· Supports the department by performing key operational and functional tasks and duties.
· Participates at program/team meetings and other relevant internal committee meetings, as required.
· Completes accurate client records and other reports (ie. daily/monthly flow sheets, progress notes
(InterRAI-LTCF), etc.) in accordance with the Ministry of Health, Long Term Care, and the policies and
procedures of The Ontario Finnish Resthome Association.
· Maintains close communication with the Manager of Program & Support Services (MPSS), Charge Nurses,
and CTRS/R/TRO’s in order to restore, maintain, and protect the health and independence of residents.
● Reports any unusual findings immediately to the Charge Nurses and MPSS.
● Other duties as directed by the MPSS.
Qualifications:
●Degree/diploma from a recognized program in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation/Leisure Studies. Other allied health science degree/diplomas may be considered (e.g., PTA/OTA, Exercise Science, etc.).
● Membership in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO).
● Completed courses in gerontology.
● Candidates with the following certifications and training will be given preference: P.I.E.C.E.STM, U-FIRST!,
● Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), Montessori Methods/DementiAbility Methods for Dementia Care, Mental Health First Aid for Seniors, Indigenous Cultural Competency Training (or equivalent), Teepa Snow “Positive Approach to Care”, Snoezelen MSE, DROM, Smart Serve, etc.
● Minimum of three years of relevant experience working in long-term care.
●Demonstrated leadership, strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, group facilitation skills, and program development.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
● Excellent time management skills.
● Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook.
● Experience with “Point Click Care” healthcare software.
● Demonstrated knowledge of community resources.
● Ability to communicate in English and Finnish an asset.
● Knowledge about Finnish culture is an asset.
● Valid Ontario Class “F” driver’s license, or equivalent, an asset.
● “Smart Serve” training an asset.
● Attendance in good standing.

Pay: $24.24-$26.63 per hour
