ARTICLING STUDENT – LAW
(July 2027 to May 2028 - 10-Month Term)
Looking for the opportunity to article in a dynamic business and legal environment? We are seeking a motivated and self-directed Articling Student to fulfill this net new role for a 10-month term from July 2027 to May 2028.
FortisOntario is an electricity utility, which owns Canadian Niagara Power, Eastern Ontario Power, Cornwall Electric, and Algoma Power. FortisOntario also act as project manager for the First Nation led Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Project. This is an exciting opportunity to work in an environment where you will contribute to our continued success in providing safe and reliable electricity to our valued customers.
As an Articling Student, you will gain exposure to all our practice areas. You will work with internal and external counsel and business groups to assess legal issues and develop business strategies. We will support you in taking on as much responsibility as you can handle - you will even take the lead on some matters.
Key functions of this role:

Corporate and commercial matters and assisting with due diligence.

Procurement and contract negotiations and drafting.

Research and preparation of legal memoranda in connection with various legislation, regulations, licenses, permits, and approvals governing our operations.

Assist in resolving disputes, including preparing materials, supporting negotiations, and coordinating next steps across internal and external stakeholders.

Corporate secretariat work including preparing board meeting materials and reports.

What makes you a successful candidate?

Must have a Canadian common law degree or equivalent and be eligible for membership with the Law Society of Ontario as a student-at-law at the time articles are to commence.

Demonstrated leadership skills and initiative, as well as the ability to work effectively with others.

A results-oriented focus and the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment.

Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail.

Superior writing and research skills.

Proficient with the use of information technology tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Westlaw.

Proven experience with keeping confidentiality and being resourceful.

Travel to other FortisOntario locations may be required. Candidate must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.
