The City of Port Moody is seeking a temporary full-time (up to 12 months) Environmental Technician to promote, investigate, interpret and ensure adherence to environmental policies, bylaws and applicable legislation by City staff, the public, and external groups.
The Environmental Technician will provide technical guidance to staff and educational outreach and advice to external contacts; will coordinate community environmental stewardship programming and events; and will develop environmental best practice procedures. This position will research and implement environmental programs with a focus on wildlife and natural area protection and will investigate and enforce environmental compliance and complaints. The Environmental Technician will apply Environmental Management act regulations during spills or releases to the environment and will maintain public records for incident response, wildlife monitoring and program participation.
Qualifications to be successful:
- Two year diploma in Environmental Studies from a recognized post-secondary program (degree in Biology or Environmental Studies is an asset, as is a Registered Professional Biologist or Biologist in Training designation)
- Two years of job-related experience, preferably in a municipal setting
- Knowledge of water and soil sampling techniques, fish habitat inventory methods and the Riparian Areas Regulation
- Working knowledge of federal, provincial, regional and local government environmental regulations
- Experience with environmental monitoring of water quality, habitat protection and sediment & erosion control as it relates to development and City projects
- Ability to perform ecological assessments
- Working understanding of provincial and federal fish and wildlife regulations (i.e. salmon, trout, bear, cougar, beaver, heron, species at risk, etc.)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Record-keeping and report writing skills
- Computer skills including MS Office, database management and some GPS
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence
