The Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) Nurse is a key member of the Clinical Geriatric Services Team, providing specialized geriatric expertise within the Emergency Department.
The GEM Nurse supports the ED team through implementation of the comprehensive geriatric assessment model of care, in collaboration with patients, families, community partners, and inpatient services, while advocating for best practices in the care of older adults.
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate is a condition of employment
- Completion of Provincial Geriatrics Leadership Ontario Common Onboarding required
- Completion of the Regional Geriatric Program Central (RGPc) Certificate Program (McMaster university) or equivalent required
- Gerontological Nursing Certificate (Canadian Nurses Association) preferred
- Current Gentile Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certification required
- Minimum (2 years) experience working in the care of older adults required
- Minimum (2 years) experience in acute care, or emergency department preferred
- Demonstrated excellence in a leadership role required
- Demonstrated interest and ability in developing, implementing, managing and evaluating programs for the elderly required
- Excellent demonstrated knowledge of community resources required
Skills/Abilities:
- Must demonstrate excellent level of interpersonal skills
- Must demonstrate excellent level of written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, clients, families, regional support services, and community partners required
- Ability to provide health teaching to individuals and groups required
- Required to demonstrate a commitment to continuing education on an annual basis and to quality improvement
- Ability to effectively assume a leadership role as a collaborative member of the health team required
- Excellent demonstrated assessment, critical thinking and intervention skills required
- Must demonstrate basic computer knowledge
- Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
- Good attendance and work record required
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
