Position Summary
In this role, you will join a dedicated and collaborative group of colleagues, supporting programs across our Specialized Rehabilitation and Developmental Services - primarily our Neuromotor and outpatient brain injury team.
Our Neuromotor team works with clients whose primary concern is motor-based or physical in nature and who have complex medical and developmental needs. Our interprofessional team supports diagnosis, consultation and interventions. Our ambulatory care Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team provides multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services to children and adolescents with moderate-to-severe acquired and traumatic brain injuries (e.g., encephalopathy, brain tumour, and motor-vehicle accidents).
The Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) administers therapy interventions to support both physiotherapy and occupational therapy treatment plans. This position will also support groups, camps, wait list management, and program projects. This is a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) position, expected to continue through March, 2027. The schedule for this position will include weekends (Saturdays) during the school year and occasional evening shifts (a few weeks per year).
Key Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, the OTA/PTA:
- Administers programs developed by the Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist to individual clients or groups of clients, such as: fine motor, cognitive groups, gross motor groups, strengthening, range of motion exercises, etc.
- Maintains communication with supervising therapist. Monitors and reports any change or adverse reaction to treatment or prescribed program plan
- Applies and monitors splinting devices, fabricates, alters, or repairs splints, orthoses, aids, or assistive devices such as hand splints
- Sets up and instructs clients, families, staff and students on appropriate equipment such as wheelchairs, trikes, bikes and walking aides, etc.
- Assists clients with activities of daily living, group work, client lifting and transferring
- Picks up and delivers supplies, equipment, etc. as requested
- Assists with wheelchair and seating set-up and maintenance as required
- Regularly inspects treatment spaces for cleanliness, safety and adequate supplies
- Maintains clean, safe, operational equipment and makes recommendations for new equipment based upon Hospital needs
- Effectively communicates with clients and families, members of the interdisciplinary team, external agencies and vendors
- In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team, provides client and family-centred care which is goal-directed, evidence-based and outcome-oriented
- Supports and respects the client/family’s rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
- Promotes and supports the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being of clients and families
- Collaborates with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care
- Bases practice on established policies and procedures
- Documents on client charts as required following Hospital policy
- Documents workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health
- Participates on committees and in quality management activities, and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment
Qualifications
- Graduate of a college OTA/PTA diploma program accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant & Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program
- Paediatric work experience preferred
- Must have a minimum of one year work experience as a OTA/PTA
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrated ability to organize time, manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work independently under the guidance of the supervising Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist
- Demonstrated initiative and self-direction regarding equipment maintenance, safety and cleaning
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary care team
