About Us
Canalside Crematorium is expanding its services to include a licensed Funeral Establishment (Class 1) in Ontario. We are currently developing this expansion in accordance with Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO) requirements.
We are seeking an experienced Funeral Director Class 1 (FD1) to join us in a leadership capacity as Funeral Establishment Manager for our new funeral service division.
This role will play a key part in the launch and ongoing operation of a modern, cremation-focused funeral establishment serving families throughout the Niagara Region.
Position Overview
The Funeral Establishment Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the funeral establishment, ensuring compliance with all applicable Ontario legislation and BAO regulations, and supporting families through arrangement and care services.
This position will also involve participation in the development and implementation of operational systems prior to opening, subject to regulatory timelines and approval.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day operations of the funeral establishment
- Meet with families to arrange cremation and funeral services
- Coordinate and oversee first-call responses and transfer services
- Ensure compliance with BAO regulations and provincial legislation
- Complete and manage all required documentation and permits
- Oversee care of deceased individuals including identification and preparation procedures (non-embalming model)
- Supervise operational staff and support service delivery standards
- Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and workflows for the establishment
- Maintain professional communication with families, healthcare facilities, and external partners
- Participate in on-call rotation as required
Qualifications
- Valid Ontario Funeral Director Class 1 (FD1) licence in good standing (required)
- Strong understanding of Ontario funeral legislation and BAO compliance requirements
- Experience in arrangement services, transfers, and funeral operations
- Excellent communication and client service skills
- Ability to work in a cremation-focused or non-traditional funeral service model
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence (required)
Assets:
- Experience in direct cremation or simplified funeral service models
- Experience in operational leadership or funeral home management
- Familiarity with transfer service operations
Work Environment
This is a modern, cremation-focused funeral establishment operating alongside an existing crematorium and transfer service. The role is suited to a professional who is comfortable working in a streamlined service model that prioritizes simplicity, dignity, and operational efficiency.
This is not a traditional full-service funeral home environment.
Compensation
Starting salary: $50,000–$65,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
As the establishment progresses through licensing and operational launch, compensation and responsibilities will be reviewed and adjusted based on the scope of the role and growth of the business.
Additional compensation may include:
- On-call pay or stipends
- Performance-based bonuses
- Additional responsibility allowances as operations expand
Additional Information
This position is contingent upon final regulatory approval and licensing of the funeral establishment. Candidates may be engaged during the development phase, with formal employment commencing upon approval.
