Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
The Research Assistant will work with Dr. Zeinab Mashreghi in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics on the development of an R package for survey methodology. The successful candidate will assist with implementing statistical methods in R, developing and testing package functionality, preparing documentation, and evaluating the performance of the implemented methods through simulation studies. This position provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in statistical computing, R package development, and software development for survey methodology.
Duties:
- Contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of an R package for survey methodology.
- Implement statistical methods and algorithms in R.
- Write clean, well-documented, and reusable R code.
- Develop and maintain package documentation.
- Test, debug, and validate package functionality.
- Conduct simulation studies to evaluate the implementation and performance of statistical methods.
- Meet regularly with the research supervisor to discuss progress and development tasks.
- Perform other project-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Current undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Winnipeg, preferably in Statistics or a related discipline.
- Strong proficiency in R programming and experience writing well-organized, reusable code.
- Knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis.
- Familiarity with survey methodology and survey sampling concepts.
- Students who have completed Survey Sampling courses at the University of Winnipeg are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage assigned tasks, and communicate effectively with the research supervisor.
- Experience with R package development is considered an asset but is not required.
- Ability to work in a shared office environment, to use a computer for extended periods, and to perform computer-based tasks requiring sustained attention to detail.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from August 17, 2026 - December 18, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 100-250 hours.
