We are seeking a compassionate and experienced caregiver to provide daily support for an 85-year-old gentleman currently hospitalized at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the life of a cognitively sharp, highly intelligent individual who has faced significant physical challenges following a serious spinal cord injury.
About the Client:
Our father is a retired engineer who, until recently, was exceptionally active and independent for his age. Following emergency spinal surgery in January to address severe spinal stenosis, he has lost the use of his hands and significant muscle mass. While he remains mentally sharp and fully capable of advocating for himself, he requires substantial physical assistance with daily activities. He is currently in the integrated stroke unit where he participates in rehabilitation therapy aimed at rebuilding strength and maximizing independence. He speaks English and Italian.
Responsibilities:
The caregiver will provide hands-on support during peak daytime hours, focusing on feeding assistance for breakfast and lunch, personal grooming including shaving and oral care, helping with comfort adjustments in bed such as pillow positioning, ensuring adequate hydration throughout the day, and serving as an advocate to communicate his needs to hospital staff. The role also includes providing companionship and engaging conversation, as he is cognitively intact and values meaningful interaction.
What We're Looking For:
We need someone with experience in hospital settings who is comfortable working alongside medical staff. The ideal caregiver has expertise in mobility and transfer assistance, feeding support for individuals with limited hand function, and personal care for patients with spinal cord injuries. We value someone who is calm, patient, reliable, takes initiative, communicates clearly with family, and brings positive energy while respecting his independence and dignity. Given his high level of cognitive function, the ability to engage in substantive conversation is important.
Schedule:
We are looking for daily support starting between 10:00 AM and running until approximately 1:00-2:00 PM, covering the most challenging hours when family cannot always be present. This schedule may be adjusted as we determine the optimal level of support. The position will initially be at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket, with the possibility of transitioning to a long-term care facility in the Kleinberg or Aurora area as placement becomes available. The caregiver would continue with him through any location changes within the region.
