WQS NDT is seeking an experienced and driven Controller to join our team on a temporary basis for an approximate 15-month term to provide maternity leave coverage.
Job Overview:
As the Controller, you will lead the financial operations that drive organizational success. This role is pivotal in ensuring accurate financial reporting, optimizing processes, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders. You will oversee the full accounting transaction activities including month-end and year-end closing activities, and day-to-day cash management and forecasting. Beyond technical expertise, you will champion process improvements, compliance, and team development, contributing to a culture of efficiency and accountability. Reporting directly to the CFO, this position offers significant influence on financial strategy and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership & Oversight
- Manage and supervise finance department, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
- Oversee and manage monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Monitor and manage cash flow requirements, analyzing both short and long term needs of the organization.
General Ledger & Accounting Operations
- Manage the general ledger, including accruals, deferrals, and adjustments
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and fixed assets
- Ensure proper documentation and internal controls are maintained
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
- Analyze financial statement variances between actual results and budget/forecast, as well as project profitability and provide meaningful explanations
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to management
- Complete weekly margining reporting
Audit & Compliance
- Act as a key contact for external auditors and coordinate audit activities
- Review audit schedules and support requests during audits and reviews
- Ensure compliance with tax filings, payroll remittances, and regulatory requirements
Process Improvement & Strategic Initiatives
- Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency within accounting workflows.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices and enhance financial systems.
Team Development & Collaboration
- Mentor and guide accounting staff, fostering professional growth and high performance.
- Act as a key liaison between finance and other departments to resolve issues and support organizational goals.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, or related roles, with a strong foundation in accounts payable and receivable processes.
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
- CPA designation
- Advanced proficiency in accounting systems and ERP platforms; experience with NetSuite, Dayforce, or similar systems highly valued.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable insights.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Proven leadership abilities, including mentoring team members and driving process improvements.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive and independent, demonstrating sound judgment and accountability in decision-making.
- Commitment to compliance and accuracy, ensuring adherence to internal controls and regulatory standards.
