South 40 Driving Institute is proud to announce the launch of a brand new Class 1 driving school built specifically for oilfield operations — training the next generation of drivers to run safely, confidently, and compliantly in the field. This isn't a generic Class 1 course; it's purpose-built around the realities of oilfield hauling.
Participants will learn oilfield driving essentials, basic service and maintenance for rigs, and the safe operation of various tractor-trailer combinations, including the specific configurations used in oilfield work. The program also covers in-depth Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) requirements, giving drivers the regulatory knowledge they need to move dangerous goods safely and legally. Trainees will get to know their tractor-trailer inside and out, building the mechanical familiarity that separates a competent driver from a great one, before applying it all to the safe, efficient operation of oilfield hauling equipment.
Graduates leave with the skills, certifications, and field-ready confidence to step into oilfield driving roles from day one.
About the Role
South 40 Driving Institute is seeking an experienced Class 1 Driving Instructor to train new and existing drivers for oilfield trucking operations across Alberta and British Columbia. This is a hands-on instructional role that combines classroom teaching with in-cab practical training. The successful candidate will also contribute to curriculum development to ensure students are fully prepared for the demands of oilfield driving.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom instruction and practical in-unit driving lessons focused on oilfield-specific skills
- Teach safe operation of various trailer types commonly used in the oilfield
- Instruct students on proper tire chaining techniques for winter and off-road conditions
- Train students to conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections
- Teach minor maintenance and troubleshooting of tractor-trailer units
- Prepare students with the full range of skills required to operate safely and effectively in the Alberta/BC oilfield environment
- Participate in the development and continuous improvement of the training curriculum
- Maintain a professional, safety-focused learning environment both in the classroom and on the road
Requirements
- Valid Class 1 driver’s licence
- Alberta-certified Class 1 Driving Instructor
- Proven experience working in the oilfield sector (required)
- Strong communication and instructional skills
- Ability to teach both in a classroom setting and during live driving sessions
- Willingness to work with students of varying experience levels
- Candidates from outside the Grande Prairie area will be considered; housing is available for successful applicants
