Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Supervisor to lead day-to-day health and safety operations on our projects in the Timmins area. Reporting to senior management, the Safety Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all employees and subcontractors adhere to the safety policies and procedures of both Carman Construction and our customers, and for auditing internal safety documentation to ensure ongoing compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and customer-specific programs.
This is a hands-on role for someone who lives and breathes a strong safety culture and leads by example in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote, implement, and enforce Carman Construction's Health & Safety Program, as well as the safety policies and procedures of each customer.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and observations to identify hazards, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions — and drive timely corrective action.
- Audit internal safety documentation, including Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), toolbox talks, equipment inspections, training records, and incident reports for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Work with supervisors, and workers on safe work practices, hazard recognition, and the proper use of PPE and equipment.
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and property damage events; complete root cause analyses and ensure corrective actions are tracked to closure.
- Deliver site-specific orientations, toolbox talks, and ongoing safety training to employees and subcontractors.
- Liaise with customer safety representatives, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD), WSIB, and other regulatory bodies as required.
- Maintain organized, audit-ready safety records and assist with internal and customer-led audits, including COR™ / SECOR audits.
- Support emergency response planning, drills, and on-site emergency response when required.
- Assist Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) activities, including monthly inspections and meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive health and safety experience in construction, heavy civil, or a related industrial environment.
- Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Construction Regulations (O. Reg. 213/91).
- Standard First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills — able to coach and influence at every level, from new hires to senior leadership.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and digital safety reporting tools.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and reliable transportation; willing and able to travel to project sites in and around the Timmins area.
Considered an Asset
- NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation through IHSA, or actively working toward it.
- CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation.
- JHSC Certification (Parts 1 and 2).
- Experience working on mining, heavy civil, or industrial customer sites in Northern Ontario.
- Common Core training (Surface or Underground).
