Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Financial Analyst to join our growing electrical contracting organization. Reporting to the Controller, the Financial Analyst will support financial reporting, job costing, profitability analysis, budgeting, and operational decision-making across the business.
The ideal candidate is a recent graduate in Accounting, Finance, or Commerce, or a CPA candidate currently enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). This role is well suited for an individual who is systems-savvy, highly proficient in Excel, and interested in developing expertise in project accounting, job costing, and operational finance within a project-based environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Analyze monthly financial performance, including revenue, gross profit, margins, and operating expenses.
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare recurring management reports and financial analyses.
- Identify and explain variances between actual results, budgets, and forecasts.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
Revenue & Margin Analysis
- Monitor and analyze revenue performance across projects and service divisions.
- Evaluate job profitability and gross margin performance.
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities impacting financial results.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to improve profitability.
Job Costing & Project Analysis
- Review project costs, including labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor expenses.
- Analyze job cost reports to ensure accurate project performance measurement.
- Support project managers with profitability reporting and project financial reviews.
- Assist in maintaining accurate project forecasts and work-in-progress reporting.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Utilize ERP and financial systems to extract, analyze, and validate data.
- Develop and maintain Excel-based financial models, reports, and dashboards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to reporting and financial processes.
- Assist with systems enhancements and reporting automation opportunities.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.
- CPA Candidate enrolled in the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) or recent graduate intending to pursue CPA designation.
Experience:
- 1-3 years of relevant accounting, financial analysis, or project accounting experience preferred.
- Experience within construction, electrical contracting, manufacturing, or other project-based industries is considered an asset.
- Exposure to job costing and project profitability analysis is preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are required, including:
- Pivot Tables
- XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP
- SUMIFS and other analytical formulas
- Financial modeling
- Data analysis and reporting
- Strong systems aptitude with the ability to learn new software quickly.
- Experience with ERP systems (Vista, Sage, Acumatica, Dynamics 365, NetSuite, or similar) is an asset.
- Experience with Power BI or other business intelligence tools is an asset.
