Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient-focused care in accordance with the nursing philosophy, policies and standards of the College of Nurses (CNO), and the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
Requirements
- Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Required)
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate (Required)
- Ability to start IVs (Required)

Responsibilities
Professional Care Expectations
- Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient care in compliance with the scope of practice
- Responsible and accountable for patient outcomes
- Identifies and prioritizes the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the patient
- Provides care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
- Acts as a patient advocate
- Incorporates current validated research and evidence-based practice into clinical practice
- Collaborates with other members of the health care team to ensure standards of care and practice are met
- Co-ordinates patient care in collaboration with the patient/family and members of the interdisciplinary team
- Liaises with patient and family to facilitate the continuity of patient care
- Monitors quality of patient care through the development and application of risk management activities
- Participates in developing teaching materials, and evaluates and reinforces education for the staff, patients and patients’ relatives
- Provides a safe and secure environment for patient, their families and staff
- Uses infection control and prevention measures
- Collaborates with the designated RPN for the provision of patient care if there is a demonstrated alteration in acuity/predictability of the patient outcome for the RPN’s patient
Unit Responsibilities
- Document medication and drug allergies
- Documentation of pre/post vitals
- Insertion of peripheral IV
- Answer patient questions and concerns
- Documents as per Painless Medicine policies, procedures, and College of Nurses Standards
- Assess patient readiness for discharge

Qualifications
- Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (attend training as required)
- Current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Required)
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate (Required)
- Current CPR certificate
- Certificate of IV or Sedation Course
- Minimum education : Diploma in Nursing
- Experience with Accuro EMR Software is an asset
- Experience with creating and implementing policies and procedures
- Sound knowledge of nursing process, theory, and responsibilities to the profession
- Excellent organization skills
- Sound problem solving, conflict resolution and decision making skills
- Functions independently within scope of practice
- Maximizes utilization of resources
- Aware of multicultural issues affecting health care needs
