We are seeking a dependable and hands-on Transfer Station Supervisor to support daily operations at our waste transfer facilities in Nova Scotia.
Reporting directly to the Transport Manager, this role is responsible for overseeing site operations, coordinating material movement, supervising site personnel, and ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations at the transfer station. This position is based out of Halifax, NS and may require early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekend work based on operational requirements.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise the daily operations of the transfer station, ensuring efficient handling, sorting, storage, and loading of solid waste materials.
Coordinate inbound and outbound material movement with drivers, dispatch, and receiving facilities.
Monitor material volumes and site capacity to maintain smooth operational flow and prevent delays.
Ensure materials are properly prepared and loaded for transportation to disposal facilities
Lead, schedule, and support transfer station staff, equipment operators, and labourers.
Provide training, coaching, and ongoing supervision to ensure safe and productive work practices.
Conduct regular safety meetings, toolbox talks, and workplace inspections.
Promote a positive team culture focused on accountability, safety, and operational excellence
Ensure all site activities comply with environmental regulations, company policies, and occupational health & safety standards.
Maintain a safe and organized work environment, including proper housekeeping and hazard identification.
Ensure all required documentation, inspections, and operational records are completed accurately.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience:
Previous supervisory experience in recycling, waste management, transportation, industrial operations, or a related field.
Strong understanding of health & safety practices and environmental compliance requirements.
Experience operating or supervising heavy equipment operations is considered an asset.
Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
Basic computer proficiency, including experience with operational reporting and Microsoft Office applications.
Working Conditions:
This position is based primarily at a waste transfer station and involves both indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Regular exposure to heavy equipment, truck traffic, noise, dust, and industrial environments. The Transfer Station Supervisor will require the use of PPE, Hardhat, Steel Toe Boots, and reflective vest to minimize risk on the worksite.
