The purpose of this position is to deliver comprehensive healthcare services to offenders incarcerated at the Provincial Correctional Centre (PCC), who present with acute and chronic health conditions, and to manage addiction and mental health issues in accordance with established clinical and correctional standards. The scope of this position includes serving as an expert resource for correctional staff and contributing to the enhancement of operational guidelines that promote an integrated approach to care by balancing clinical responsibilities with security requirements, ensuring that both health outcomes and institutional safety objectives are achieved. This position reports to the Divisional Nurse Manager.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Delivers comprehensive nursing care to offenders with acute and chronic health conditions and manages addiction and mental health issues in accordance with established clinical and correctional standard;
- Implements critical procedures and crisis intervention strategies as necessary and responds to life saving situations using nursing standards and protocols for treatments;
- Conducts timely offender health assessments and develops appropriate treatment plans and referrals for services as required;
- Evaluates, on an ongoing basis, treatment plans and therapeutic interventions and as necessary reports findings to other health care providers involved in care and/or other PCC staff as required;
- Provides nursing care based on nursing assessment and offender medical history under medical direction (when necessary) or independently;
- Provides clinical and medical supervision of the day-to-day nursing care services by referring offenders for services, scheduling health care personnel visits, and follow up on clinical and medical issues;
- Administers medications and carries out treatments/procedures as ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner;
- Works collaboratively as part of the client’s case management team, which includes other medical, psychiatric, therapeutic and correctional personnel;
- Participates and advises in program review for nursing services;
- Assists offenders to navigate health system processes and provide the offender with strategies to continue with health care in community;
- Coordinates a multidisciplinary team related to the care and treatment of offenders;
- Ensures the on-call physicians, Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Manager are consulted and updated as required;
- Maintains client medical files in accordance with standard practice, policy and legislative requirements.

- Additional relevant education and experience would be considered an asset;
- Previous experience working in a correctional environment would be considered an asset;
- Experience working with clients who have addiction and mental health issues would be an asset.
