Hours of work: Up to 37.5 hours per week
Please note this is an on-call position.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the On Call Education Assistant is to be responsible for students, with a focus on students with high needs. The Education Assistant will provide a solid and safe foundation which fosters the student’s physical, intellectual, emotional, social and cultural development.
Please Note: The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) is unable to support applications that require Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) sponsorship or any employer‑driven immigration program. Applicants must already have the legal right to work in Canada on their own behalf. Only candidates who meet this requirement will be considered.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
Reports to the Vice Principal
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Teachers with organization of material and lesson preparation
- Assist Teachers with small group instruction under the direction of the classroom Teacher
- Provide one to one support for students in literacy and math
- Assist Teachers in identifying ways to help and support student learning outcomes
- Follow and provide input into Individual Education Plans and SMART Goals while continually assessing student progress and recommending adjustments to ensure IEP goal are met
- Assist in managing classroom expectations through positive reinforcement
- Be a positive role model for behaviour; practice respectful student/adult interactions
- Supervise outside play at recess and lunch, while on fieldtrips, and assist in other supervision duties as required
- Manage incidents involving students to ensure children have a safe and secure environment
- Develop and maintain a good working relationship with parents
- All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
- Participate in staff language classes
- Assist in the delivery of language to students
- Perform other duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and not require any immigration support through RNIP or any external agency
- Grade 12 diploma
- Certified Education Assistant is preferred
- Current First Aid/CPR certificate
- Two years of experience as Education Assistant is preferred
- Experience working with elementary aged students and their parents
- Experience working with First Nations communities
CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE
$22.00 - $28.00 per hour dependant on education and experience
