Mainline Excavator Operator Job Description
Job Summary
The Mainline Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment to excavate trenches, install underground utilities, and support site preparation and restoration activities. This position demands precision and strict adherence to safety protocols while working collaboratively within a team environment. The operator will utilize excavators and related equipment to facilitate water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including the installation and rehabilitation of water mains, sewer lines, and manholes. Safe and efficient operations in compliance with company policies and regulatory standards are essential, as is effective coordination with site supervisors and crew members to achieve project timelines and maintain high-quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
· Operate excavators to dig trenches for water and sewer lines according to engineered plans and specifications.
· Safely maneuver equipment around underground utilities, structures, and personnel.
· Load and unload materials such as gravel, soil, and pipe bedding.
· Perform routine maintenance checks and report equipment issues.
· Assist with installation and backfilling of water mains, sewer lines, manholes, catch basins, and service connections.
· Follow site safety procedures and implement ground disturbance safe work practices.
· Collaborate with pipe layers, labourers, and supervisors to ensure project timelines and quality standards are met.
· Work with pipelayer to ensure proper grade.
· Identify, report, and manage hazards related to excavation and trenching, ensuring trench safety including shoring, benching, and sloping as required.
· Participate in site safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency drills.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Report to the Foreman (Site Supervisor).
- Complete daily equipment inspections and submit reports through SiteDocs.
- Communicate equipment issues, safety hazards, and other concerns.
- Review and sign off on all daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs
- Report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to Foreman (Site Supervisor)
- Complete and submit incident reports, near-miss documentation,
Qualifications
- Valid operator certification or equivalent training (if required).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Knowledge of ground disturbance safe work procedures and practices, soil types, and any other safe work procedures and practices related to the work being performed
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, and compaction specifications.
- Physical ability to perform tasks in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
Physical Demands
- Frequent sitting and operating machinery for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to control levers and foot pedals.
- Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.
- Walking, standing, bending, and climbing on uneven terrain.
- Exposure to vibration, noise, and outdoor elements.
- Climb in and out of equipment safely and frequently.
- Constant awareness and attentiveness is required including spatial awareness
Work Environment
- Work performed outdoors on active construction sites, including water and sewer installation and rehabilitation projects.
- Exposure to dust, noise, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
- Typical work hours are 8–12 hour shifts with potential for overtime, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, as required by project schedules.
