Payroll Accounting Manager
Reporting to the Senior Payroll Manager, the Payroll Accounting Manager will be responsible for company payroll remittances, payroll reporting both internal and external as well as financial account reconciliations in accordance with company and government policies.
This position is based in Winnipeg or Edmonton office dependent on the selected candidate's place of residence.
What You Will Be Working On

Approve payroll remittances such as union dues, employer associations, tax authorities, workers’ compensation, and benefits, verifying accuracy and identifying opportunities for process improvements.

Perform reconciliations on general ledger accounts and approve entries as required to balance accounts.

Support month end / quarter end / year end and audit reporting requirements.

Prepare detailed reports of payroll information to internal stakeholders.

Interpret collective agreements, working with management and unions to ensure compliance, while driving standardization and influencing change to improve payroll processes and consistency.

Coordinate with the Digital Services team to test and implement payroll system calculations, reports, automation, and enhancements.

Proactively work with internal stakeholders to improve the operational effectiveness of payroll functions, both within the payroll team and across stakeholder teams.

Leverage and utilize technology to build efficiencies, automation, and scalability in payroll processes and reporting of remittances and financial data.

Manage the payroll accounting team of administrators, including delegation, review of work, training, coaching, and coverage planning.

Actively liaise with staff and management on payroll‑related inquiries.

Maintain and safeguard confidential employee information.
What We Are Looking For
- Undergraduate degree or Diploma in Business, Accounting, or a combination of equivalent skills and experience.

CPA designation or actively pursuing preferred; alternatively, candidates who bring extensive relevant financial accounting experience.

Relevant experience in payroll, HR accounting, or related financial accounting functions.

PCP designation and experience using an in‑house payroll system considered an asset.

Advanced proficiency in Excel, including experience with automation, data analysis, and scalable reporting solutions.

Proven track record of process improvements and continuous improvement mindset.

Excellent communication and leadership skills; customer‑service oriented and a collaborative team player.

Experience leading and developing a team is an asset.

Ability to manage a large volume of work, meet deadlines consistently, and maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Ability to forge, grow, and maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholder groups.

Strong written and oral communication skills.
