About the team
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation team of accounting professionals oversee all accounting and financial activities, and establish financial policies, procedures, internal controls and reporting systems.
What you’ll do
The Director, Accounting and Controller is responsible for the overall management of the accounting work unit and for providing strategic leadership and oversight of the organization’s accounting operations to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable financial reporting. This role establishes and maintains financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting systems to support organizational goals and compliance requirements, as well as leads the annual audit process.
Responsibilities include:
- Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and ensuring compliance of financial policies and procedures.

Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, improving and ensuring compliance of internal controls.

Monitor and confirm financial condition of the organization by leading the planning, coordination and execution of year-end audits and providing recommendations for procedural improvements.

Comply with provincial and federal government requirements and the Canadian accounting standards (IFRS, ASPE, NPO, Pension) by studying existing and new legislation/standards; anticipating future legislation/standards; ensuring adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; and advising management on needed actions.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and conferences.

Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll and fixed assets and ensure issuance of timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements to Executive Director, STF Executive, boards and committees.

Review month-end accounting processes to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained and efficiencies are achieved.

Determine the requirements for the accounting/financial programs and the best means to meet these requirements.

Manage cash flow for certain Federation funds and recommend the most effective use of idle funds.

Present the quarterly financial statements to the STF Executive and respond to any questions or comments.

Design, establish, and maintain a structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the work unit’s goals and objectives.

Engage in planning, budgeting and forecasting processes.

Fulfill role on the Budget, Finance and Audit Committee as determined by the committee’s terms of reference.

Act as liaison between the accounting unit and other organizational work units to ensure financial processes are integrated, efficient and compliant with internal controls and external regulatory requirements.

People management and leadership:

Lead the consistent delivery of accounting operations aligned with organizational objectives.

Develop and implement the annual accounting operational plan; monitor progress and adjust as needed.

Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the accounting unit to enhance efficiency, accuracy and responsiveness to organizational needs.
- Provide oversight, coaching, and mentorship to accounting team members to ensure their success.

Assign workloads, monitor performance, and establish clear accountability for deliverables.
- Support positive team culture and professional growth.

Address day‑to‑day people management issues in a timely manner.
What you’ll bring

An undergraduate degree and a professional accounting designation; combined with a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible management experience.

Experience with not-for-profit organizations would be an asset.

Strong technical accounting knowledge.

Knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards (IFRS, ASPE, Non-profit organizations and Pensions).

Proven experience in leading audit processes and working with external auditors and regulatory bodies.

Highly developed analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills to evaluate alternatives and provide recommendations on business issues.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate key data, including presentations to senior management and boards of directors.

Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across departments and influence financial decision-making at all levels of the organization.

Demonstrated efficiency in using spreadsheets and automated accounting and financial reporting systems.

Demonstrated ability to effectively handle work requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

- A competitive salary range of $137,373.60 - $166,439
